Include external battery for emergency power outages

Guys, I am liking your thinking :-) I have a little spare cash to play with here so I will look into that as well!!! Spent £30 so far so I will look to expand the budget to a diode maybe

Yes, sorry I did miss that point earlier. But yes I do agree with you - that is a risk.

Include external battery for emergency power outages

On the question of being in during the power cut - point taken and agreed. I have simply piggy-backed the connector for the second battery onto the first battery. Electrically two identical batteries in parallel are going to be same current and voltage so I am happy that the panel can cope...

Include external battery for emergency power outages

Thanks for all of the discussions and ideas. Here's how it all ended. I went out and bought a pair of lovely new 7Ah batteries to replace the existing one (just to rule out any fault with the 3yr+ old battery) and a spare. Swapped that over in 5 mins. Next to the panel (but isolated from...

Include external battery for emergency power outages

Thanks for you help. I give in, and will talk to the alarm company on Monday. Something is not right if the battery should have lasted about 20 hours. By the way, if I have the engineer's code should I simply be able to enter the PIN and bingo I am in? Or is it more complicated than that?

Include external battery for emergency power outages

Actually I thought I did have the engineer's code, but when I enter the code nothing happens? Is there a sequence to using the engineer's code? Actually 8 off PIRs and they are the 'dual action' pet safe type (need both indicators to alarm) but even with that your calculations suggest plenty...

Include external battery for emergency power outages

That's probably the key question isn't it? I will try that tomorrow. I will open the panel (which will set off the tamper, but I can silence with my code?) and then put a meter on the battery to measure the current. Then I will turn of the mains to the panel and measure what happens. That...

Include external battery for emergency power outages

No the bells didn't actually go off Yes Nothing wrong with the battery, and was replaced last year Don't want to go to bed in the dark just waiting for the bells to start going off. Didn't make for a restful night's sleep. What if the power cut had gone on another hour?

Include external battery for emergency power outages

Oh dear. I was hoping it wouldn't be that hard :-( I was exaggerating. It was less than that. I was trying to set the seen for a loooonnnngggg powercut. Not sure exactly how long it actually was. I was going to buy the proper smart charger to keep the Yuasa fully charged. Then leave it...

Include external battery for emergency power outages

That as may be I don't really want to spend that much, so I'll keep a charged 17Ah nearby and then if there is a power-cut I will connect the big 17Ah in parallel and then manually disconnect the little 7Ah. That will leave the panel running off the 17Ah. I will need to manually switch back...

Include external battery for emergency power outages

How do I tell what panel? I am pretty sure the alarm company told me it wouldn't support a 17Ah.

Include external battery for emergency power outages

Hi, I have an old Castle Meridian panel with the standard 7Ahr standby battery in it. We recently had a severe (24hr) powercut and the battery very nearly drained. Spent the night nervously waiting for the bells to go off!! I would like to buy a nice 17Ahr battery to keep as a spare...
