    Attaching rafters to timber

I have a patio structure done and now I want to attach the rafters. The timber is about 4.7cm wide. How long screws should I use to attach the rafters? The rafter (birds mouth bit) is about 8.5cm thick. The underlying timber is twice as thick so I think 16cm long screw would be enough...

What to put on the roof - patio?

This transparent stuff looks great but not sure how often will I have to clean the birds poo. It's like buying a shiny car but then realising the parking spot is next to some big trees the birds love to congregate and dwell.

What to put on the roof - patio?

Yes, I want a waterproof roof. Wines will go on a separate structure. I need a permanent roofing. The slope is going to be quite decent so I am not worried about the debris, it will most likely slide down.

What to put on the roof - patio?

Hi, I hope you are well. I am in the process of building my patio and I am going to have rafters 60cm apart, no purlins. The last one will not be exactly 60cm apart but less I reckon 40cm apart. I have to decide on the material to cover the roof. I am looking for something that will block as...

External doors for triple glazing unit

I will order the frame and the glazing unit. It has been clarified to me that it's good to go for a single large unit to avoid more framing which does not insulate as well as triple glazing. It has also been explained to me to make sure all glass including middle pane to be safety glass...

Double glazed unit for a bathroom window

Right. Do you mean the 68m distance? Mine is a semi-detached house but I don't think my next door neighbour can see anything as there is a 5m tall hedge at the boundary. The neighbours opposite, across the gardens (65m away) would need binoculars to spot anything.

Double glazed unit for a bathroom window

Hi All, I hope you are well. I have a question re my bathroom window. I know people use patterned or tinted glass for bathroom windows but in my case my neighbours windows are like 68 meters away. Would it be a sin if I use a clear glass so I can see my garden from the bathroom? If I was...

Failed double-glazed unit and thermal efficiency

Hi All, I hope you are well. Do you know what is the drop of thermal efficiency when the unit fails? I think there are a couple of stages of the failure. On some units I can clearly tell it failed but some can still be transparent but once I look closer I can see the marks on the inside.

    Stained wood and water repellent

Yeah, you are right, what I read on the label No Nonsense is primarily for masonry so as you said to soak into the brickwork so it can repel water. The guy I watched did his pergola but I could see he has all the time and money in the world to do it.

    Stained wood and water repellent

Right so the man on YT who did that I think is a master of overkill. Yes, the posts were pressure treated and tanalised.

    Stained wood and water repellent

Hi All, I hope you are well. I am preparing timber for my patio and I just use some mahogany wood stain on the timber posts. On a YT video I saw a man applying a No Nonsense water repellent on top of that. I think it's a good idea but I don't know how to proceed. I did sand the surface with 240...

    Driveway

For anyone who needs I got an answer at another message board: Gas pipes need to be buried to at least 450mm under a driveway with light vehicular traffic. If you can't reach that depth then you need mechanical protection, like a concrete slab at least 100mm above the pipe. If you've got heavy...

    Driveway

Hi All, I hope you are well. I am digging in the front yard to prepare everything for the driveway. I come across a yellow gas pipe about 35-40cm deep in relation to the public pavement. My plan is to remove about 30cm of soil and replace it with 20cm of MOT type 3 compact it then 5cm plastic...

    Wooden patio

Hi All, I hope you are well. I have a project to build this patio at the back and I already changed the design to simplify it a bit. https://ibb.co/167c5RL https://ibb.co/0cYvng0 The idea is to use 6 inch posts then 5 inch crossbeams in mortis and tendom on top of posts and 2x12 girders to...

Windows sill and a camera mount - what glue?

This is exactly what I did and the camera was not blown away during the 50mph winds we had earlier this year. Thanks again.

Windows sill and a camera mount - what glue?

right so you advise to use some strips of glazing tape or get a single wide piece and attach it. From what I measured the PVC piece is going to be 100x200mm so the attach surface is going to be 100mm X 100mm.
