    Leaking Roof Dormer Flashing Advice

I would, but it was a bit of a palaver ratchet-strapping three ladders together to get up there, and I have taken that all apart now. If I remember I will take a pic of some other flashing that looks similar from ground level, and I will also scratch the surface a bit to see what metal it...

Where to start ? : Faulty gear box and repair

There is SO much involved with even getting a gearbox out of a car - even before you open the gearbox itself on the bench.............if you have never worked on a car, this is absolutely NOT the place to start to learn. A very long, involved and difficult job, especially without a proper...

Audi A5 2.0 TDI Power Steering Control Module Location

Obvious question, but not knowing VCDS; does it give any location information, fuse info or wiring diagrams? The electric steering motor is usually part of the rack, and if an end seal has perforated, water could get in and corrode the motor - leading to fuse blowing. The fuse that feeds the...

    B&Q Fitting Service Gone Wrong

Very sorry to hear this but I have to say that I am not surprised. Cost cutting is rife in the industry, and to cut costs, they cut corners. Statements about verifying builders probably go no further than a quick glance at a local trader listing - which no doubt almost anyone can get their name...

How to turn off the water

There will be a cold feed pipe going into the base of your hot water cylinder - should be 22mm. The valve that feeds this is the one to turn off. Follow the pipe with your hand to confirm that it goes into the base of the hot water cylinder. There will be two other 22mm pipes near the lower...

    Log splitting maul recommendations

I didn't know that an axe is not the best tool to split logs - it gets jammed and stuck too easily. A maul has a different head profile and it does not have a sharp edge, by design. Axes are for cutting across wood grain if you are chopping down a tree; mauls are for splitting the logs apart...

    Intercom buzzer way too loud

No problem at all, you didn't - I have a cold coming on and couldn't sleep anyway :-( Been to Calgary, Whistler, (some of the best slopes I have skied), and Vancouver; all lovely. And Toronto, ditto. I have relatives near Halifax, NS. I am sure you know how to wire a potentiometer, but if not...

    Intercom buzzer way too loud

Huh, you can't sleep either ?! Oh just noticed your flag, you are probably 7 hours behind me. A 45 Ohm resistor might halve the volume, but it might not vary linearly with voltage, so I would go for something like a 250 Ohm pot and adjust to taste.

Electric theft by EV owners causing charge points to be switched off.

Look at the amount of vehicles on any road. Where I live, I often walk along the pavement past long queues of stationery or slow moving cars. Or past cars stuck in queues to leave the supermarket. People use their cars to drive a mile, or less than a mile, or if it is raining, and this is just...

    Intercom buzzer way too loud

Going by the circuit diagram, you can put a resistor in series at the CA connection, and that will only affect the buzzer volume. Not knowing the impedance of the door phone speaker, it is hard to suggest a value. The impedance could be between 8 and 600 Ohms. I would try a 250 Ohms resistor or...

    Crossing two 230V cables

I have never heard of this as being a problem - wires in and leading from your consumer unit no doubt cross each other in places, as will wires under your floors. It could be a problem if you were routing low signal level cables, such as AV cables or computer or alarm cables near mains cables...

How to add rawlplug on brick after going through plasterboard?

Thank you Koolpc, those are the exact ones I was thinking of ! As far as OM2; Too much work involved ? Just one drill bit through the plasterboard and into the wall to the appropriate depth. Then simply tap the plastic part in, tap the metal sleeve in, and screw in the screw. No more work than...

How to add rawlplug on brick after going through plasterboard?

I admit I have not read the whole thread, so someone might have suggested this: there are now fittings designed exactly for this. They consist of a long "rawl plug" which goes from the surface of the plaster board all the way into the brick or block behind. Then they have a metal tube which you...

    Missed with my mallet yesterday

Wear gloves - especially if you don't hammer all that often, and therefore might not have the best hand-eye coordination. Leather, or maybe the new sort of snug fitting site gloves made from stretchy material are very good to work in, and would reduce damage such as yours. - You still might get...

    Log splitting maul recommendations

Charlie DIYte has done a recent video on youtube about log splitting using a selection of mauls, axes and a hydraulic splitter.

boiler cuts out shortly after firing up

Also make sure you buy some inhibitor and put that in. Lack of inhibitor was no doubt what caused your problem in the first place. Come to think of it, this might be an issue with the system I have just inherited.

Electric theft by EV owners causing charge points to be switched off.

I always find it interesting that some people go on about electric vehicles being rubbish because they think it is all too difficult. When the fossil fuel car was first invented, a person had to WALK in the road ahead with a red flag !!, but look at fossil vehicles now. So for electric cars this...

    What is this pipe for?

The pipe looks like threaded steel electrical conduit, so......maybe leading to an old earthing rod which might have been added ad hoc; routing through the old wooden window frame after the place was built? Have you dug around the bottom of the pipe to see where it goes ?

    Leaking Roof Dormer Flashing Advice

This is a coincidence - I have a very similar issue. Yours looks to me as if it has been incorrectly applied; the flashing should turn vertically upwards behind the vertical tiles for a few inches otherwise the rainwater will simply drain down the gap between those and the pitched roof. The...

    Getting silicone neat

Search for Charlie DIYte on youtube and watch his video on applying silicone sealant. He has fully researched, and once and for all shown, how to properly and correctly apply silicone sealant, and why the other methods are substandard. No tape, no fingers, no mess, no bother. He has completely...
