    Fixing a wall plate

I had to replace a section of wall plate because it was rotten. I used wood of the same width and thickness as the original 4x1. I have fixed the joists to it using a skew nail but I can now lift the joists and the wall plate comes up to, obviously. It's all very loose and springy now :cry...

    Sistering floor joists

By the way I forgot... I had asked whether laying insulation between the floor joists was a good idea or not. The chap who came to treat the joists this am advised that it would restrict the airflow around them and could cause the timber to sweat.

    Sistering floor joists

Thanks masona and kevnurse. I did a search on this site before starting the job and saw masona that you had already advised somebody to check the wall plate with a screwdriver. I'm not sure what a wallplate is  Is it the piece of wood that runs along the brick walls that the joists are...

    Sistering floor joists

Some of them yes although not too bad. They have woodworm. I'm having them all treated tomorrow. The are structurally sound. I am going to lay insulation between the joist but would this be detrimental to the airflow?

    Sistering floor joists

Sistering = Instead of replacing an old joist, I have read (on a different website) that you can lay a new one along side it and fix it to the existing one. The joists in my case are on the ground floor and are fixed to the sill with a skew nail.

I have lifted a couple of boards to see what's underneath and found a 3 foot void. So my next question was going to be how to I stop the insulation falling through? Thanks for your tip ColJack spot on. By adding the insulation will I be restricting the airflow around the joists which may...

    Can't afford underfloor heating.

Thanks for the quick reply jdp. There are two rooms each about 16sqm. I hope this doesn't make me sound thick  but do you think I could put this board under the Ply, in between the joists? My concern is that the height of the floor is getting ever higher. The ply is 18mm thick, the...
