    Cooker tripping rcd

Thanks jj for the tip. I did try removing the fp but as you said the screws under the side panel were obscuring the heads. You'd have to take the side panel off to get access to them. I didn't quite understand, are you saying there is a way to get the fp off without removing the sp? I think the...

    Cooker tripping rcd

I'll take the back off today and test the elements with the insulation resistance tester. Perhaps one I bought is faulty. Visual inspection of the back shows nothing obvious. Stripping the cooker is a bit of a no no as the hobs and side oven are in daily use. I'd like to have a plan on how to...

    Cooker tripping rcd

Could it be the insulation is damp on back of the oven? Is it OK to use without this in situ/ test?

    Cooker tripping rcd

Thanks for the replies, i do have an insulation resistance tester, used on testing domestic installs. I assume this is the right thing? Goes up to 1000V. Should i just test the elements to earth or via the element ends? I didnt test the elements out of situ before install. I guess i could do...

    Cooker tripping rcd

Hi, I've recently install my smeg suk92mfx which has been stored in the garage for a few years. It's a range cooker. On turn on of the main oven on any setting, including the oven light only, then turning the temp Control (far left control) , 10-15 secs later it trips the rcd. The secondary oven...

Building cloakroom toilet under the stairs on ground floor

Pretty Big job fifth g a downstairs loo. Under the stairs is usuawlky a good place if a little tight. Not sure what you mean about vent, u mean extractor fan? The sewer needs to connect under the floor to your outside stack, which will involve digging and redoing the sewer.

    Installing a kitchen extractor

Yes, there is prolly a min distance you should adhere too. You can get flat 100mm extractor tube, run it flat along the ceiling, you may be able to squeeze it in past the boiler, if not and you want to keep to the 30mm you'd need to put a bend in it. I'm not sure if on that length of run you'd...

    Installing a kitchen extractor

You could run up to the first floor void and along to wall and out, fairly easy job if your joists run tyhe same way, or if not, replace the coving and run out along the ceiling, then out, even easier job, if you can avoid fouling boiler flue :)

Loft Conversion - 1950s Semi Ongoing

Nice blog! Thanks for posting it. Great work. I have a few questions for you! Are the steels only supported at the ends? I guess you bolted them together in situ. The door is required for buikding regs? Non negotiable? Shame as it takes up a lot of the room. Could you alternatively fitted it...

    Loft room

OK thanks that clarifies the height then. Is there a minimum size for floor joists? Or do bthey just need to be suitable for tgtghe span? Does it have to be insulated to 100mm to get BR too?

    Loft room

Are you saying you can't get BR if the head height is less than 2m?

    Loft room

Sorry don't think made I made it clear. There is a boarded floor space and plasterboard sides there at the moment however joists don't look that thick and it doesn't already have BR. There is good head height. 2m id stay. Staircase could be added to the centre in the hall. Does it need...

    Loft room

Can anyone advise what are the key things to look for when converting an existing loft room to building regs, ie thickness of floor joists, board type, sidewall insulation requirements, purlin supports? What is required to add a dormer or velux? Is a stairway required? I'm not looking to extend...

    Damp party wall

Perhaps the neighbours already have an impermeable layer on their side and you are recieving all the damp. Id get a new bricky though, and block up that old flue (it looks like it has a big gap in the pic), while your at it, you could even start knocking our and rebuilding ;)

    Water under floor when rains

This is an interesting topic, so i thought i would ask a similiar but slightly off topic question. If you beleive that damp and water affecting your property is coming from a council gutter in poor repair at the side of your house are the council oblidged to a repair or replace the gutter (half...

mystery sound coming from roof - help!

Had a pidgeon in a chinmey for about a month. Finally figurd out where the racket was actually coming from, took the top of the firegrate out, and hey presto there it was, sat on top of the backplate. After some gentle coaxing, it dropped down and after a few minutes figured out how to fly out...

    Understanding Thermostats

A manual thermostat such as a honeywell and a mechanical clock on the boiler is best. Forget the wifi carp, plumbers like them as no wiring involved, and the wifi never works, you may even get your neigbours stat turning off your boiler. My 2c.

Drylining / Internal wall insulation. I have some questions

Firstly ensure your loft insulation is up to scratch and sealed all gaps. You may be surprised by the result. Either celotex or standard type rolls of insulation. Lay it on. Thick. Dot and Dab even with standard plasterboard or foil backed adds a useful insulating airgap between the wall and...

    Condensation in Rooves

Thought id post back with a quick update. There have been a few very cold nights well below dew point and there is still some condensation but it appears improved considerably. One side where the vents were installed at low level, the condensation appears to have gone altogether, but there is...
