    Drying out house - dehumidifier?

I bought one of these, very useful for checking the temperature of the dew points, min max temps. Along with a laser thermeter, im able to check the parts of the wall that are below dew point. Central heating going in so it should be interesting to see what happens once the wall temperature...

Replacing felt with breathable membrane from inside loft

I have tried those vents. They are very dependent on how tightly fitting are your tiles. If you have gaps they may work as clay tiles usually have. If you dont ie have fibre cement tiles or equivalent tight fitting they wont work. My investigations have found that the most effective type of...

    Preventing condensation with steel roof

Is this standard pratice on upper stories now when say putting up or replacing the ceilings, ie put a vapour barrier up first then plasterboard? Can one substitute a foil backed plasterboard in this case instead? Ta,

    Condensation in Rooves

I have removed all the insulation from the edges of the roof. It was pressed into the corners. There is some daylight showing through now. I also added some roof vents at some expense :( A gamble who knows if it will work or not or i have chucked money away. Will let you know later after a...

Help! Strange damp stains appearing all over my ceiling!

You often find that heavy sideways rain will penetrate tiles. If there is no felt then it will stain the ceiling. You might find it then drys naturally and never recurs( I have seen this before). It could be worse you could have monofol membrane instead of felt lol (see my thread).

    Condensation in Rooves

Found couple of interesting link which seems like the same problem. http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=166127 http://www.buildingconservation.com/articles/roof/roof-ventilation.html Any further comments? Seems like ventilation is key, a reroof may not even fix the problem...

    Condensation in Rooves

It seems that roof vents are going to be required (but might not work) according to a local roofer i had look at the roof. What is your experience with how effective these vents are? Is the positioning of the vents critical. Are top level vents more effective than low level (there are no soffit...

    Drying out house - dehumidifier?

Thanks for the comments guys. The reason for the interest is the issue im having drying out a wall. Im not sure that there is no longer water ingress as the plaster is not drying out. It has been proably 3 weeks now. There was cracked render (since sealed 6 weeks ago) so the wall could well of...

    Drying out house - dehumidifier?

This is an interesting topic. Does anyone know more about how these work and dry the fabric? The external humidity is say 80-100% on a cold wet winters day. The internal humidity is 80% (its damp inside due to water ingress). You fire up your dehum. Leave for 24 hrs. A few litres of water is...

    Condensation in Rooves

Inspected my roof on a cold damp winters morning only to find a lot of condestation running down the inside plastic membrane (i know this is not breathable) onto the roof edge which is causing the plaster not to dry. Has anyone tried easy vents or the felt lap vents available on ebay and with...

    Drying out house - dehumidifier?

Nice project, im currently working on something similar, not easy at all trying to get stuff done in this weather. I would say even this time of year a dehumid works very well. Especially if you are plastering inside, you are adding masses of water, ask me how i know. I would get an industrial...

New ceiling was taped, but now cracks have appeared

Perhaps try repairing using dry lining joint cement next time over an old celiing. Much lighter and no plasterering or water based products required either. With the scrim over the cracks will flex too with the old ceiling.

Exterior render repair & redecoration - sensible price?

20 a square meter is very cheap, id say 30 is about as low as youd get. This would be a complete hack off though rather than a 'cover up'. Scaffold and waste removal would be extra. Add more to the price for modern materials or lime up to say 70 sqm.
