    cove or not to cove

If I may add that I use artex for fixing the coving which is also very good for filling the mitre if you do have one that doesn't meet properly. You can't be an expert straight away( & I'm still not :( ) so a bit of filling is ok. You can sand it down when it is hard and get a nice corner.

    cove or not to cove

I know what you mean and must admit to making the odd mistake myself. What I do is take 2 off-cuts about 12" long and cut a LH and RH external on one, and a LH and RH internal on the other. These are your 'masters' which you keep in front of you when you are about to make a cut. Say you have...

    switched wire colour code

I’m about to fit a weatherproof junction box and 2 gang weatherproof switch on the outside wall to feed a pond pump and a light. I shall bring power into the junction box connector block then out of the box to the switch. I can link the switch feed terminals within the switch box so only need...

    Gaps under skirting board

OK, but the flooring section was probably the correct one :) It's just that if you start a thread under one heading and then cross-post it in another you get two discussions. Anyway, what I'm suggesting is that you get a piece of 125mm skirting to start with and cut it to length. Mark the...

    Recommend Me A Washer / Dryer - Under £450

Absolutely right breezer and I used to live a few yards from the factory. They had a shop on site where you could buy spares. The guy who sells the graded m/c's does also sell Hoover and I've just realised I've got one of his Hoover freezers as well.

    Gaps under skirting board

My opinion is that chipboard is a great flooring material. If you have a solid concrete floor and make a good job of laying the slab you don't need to screed it. The chipboard can be laid on polystyrene sheets and gives a well insulated floor. I'm never going to screed a floor again; it's hard...

    Tumble Dryer In The Bathroom??

In a lot of houses the missus IS the washing machine and that's why a lot of girls like a white wedding; so their dress matches the other kitchen appliances. On a serious note, shouldn't the fused spur be outside the bathroom and terminating in a flex-outlet plate in the bathroom?

    Gaps under skirting board

As I understand it the laminate floor was laid before the skirting so the expansion gap is behind the skirting. Let's hope the floor has stopped sinking, so one way to do this is to replace the skirting and scribe it in to the floor line. Why did the floor sink though?

    Tumble Dryer In The Bathroom??

My opinion is that the only place for a washing machine is in the garage. Nothing to do with electrical safety but it's a fact that they will ALL flood eventually; it's just a matter of time.

    Recommend Me A Washer / Dryer - Under £450

Definitely more to go wrong, just like combi boilers. There is a small shop near me run by an ex washing machine engineer and he sells graded machines. That is brand new but dented, but if it's on the side what does it matter? You get the full guarantee and I've bought a two washing machines and...

    Concrete mix ratio?

Perhaps there is a connection between the Council insisting on deep foundations and the income they raise from landfill charges. Is that a bit too cynical of me?

    Concrete mix ratio?

I'm semi-retired now and don't do a lot so I'm a bit out of touch then. I thought they were generally happy with 1m depth. I do remember alll the problems after the '76 summer when a lot of subsidence was attributed to shallow foundations. I think at that time the council were liable as they had...

    Upstairs Radiators

I assume you have bled the air off? I would turn off the downstairs ones completely and see if you can get flow upstairs. Were the pipes replaced as well?

    Concrete mix ratio?

That's quite a big extension Andy. Assuming you will use trench-fill to one block below ground level 20m³, gives about 31m length of wall. It may be best to try to work to a multiple of full lorry loads. If you had the concrete to 2 blocks below ground level i.e. 450mm, then you would only need...

    Plaster and kitchen units

Good point Tony but why is the wall damp? It could be that the sink/worktop wasn't sealed correctly so there isn't really a problem at all. I've renovated several houses which had this problem and they were dry-lined, which isn't a good idea in a kitchen. I always remove the plasterboard in the...
