    Concrete mix ratio?

Andy, masona is absolutely right and you should order 20mm aggregate(that's 20mm down rather than single size). If you ordered Readymix you would get 20mm unless otherwise specified. If you were using a strip foundation and two leaves of 100mm blockwork with a 50mm cavity, then you would fill...

    Brick Strength

The choice of a suitable brick can depend on exposure to extreme weather conditions but strength is not an issue here so match the facing bricks with the property.

    Concrete mix ratio?

The plans that were passed by your Building Control Dept would have specified the foundation concrete. If you use ready-mix you specify a grade which would normally be C15 which is between 1:3:6 and 1:2:4(C20) but certainly not 1:1.5:3(C25), as you say Wickes recommend. Perhaps Wickes want to...

    Swiss Cheese Plant Cutting?

I once had one that was a bit lanky and had lost the lower leaves. I cut the top part of the stem which had a few leaves and some aerial roots. I made sure the aerial roots were in the compost but didn't use rooting compound. It grew ok.

Whats the worst can happen..shower question again

From my experience of letting bed-sits to young people I would advise fitting a 45A DP switch outside the bathroom instead of the pull switch. I had one pull switch that required dismantling to fix a new cord; I never got it back together.

    Spring clips for trade cases

    What about these? Any good?

    Useful supplier

Thanks for that link Fitter. I've got some built-in wardrobes to make and some of that door gear looks promising.

    Spring clips for trade cases

I've dropped one of mine as well; the safety catch can't be relied on. You can get a box of 'R' clips from MachineMart I don't know if the sizes are suitable but it's the right sort of clip. Expensive if you don't need them all but saves a couple of hours sorting?

    Tiling/sockets

If I may add to Meblin's post by saying I've got an electric tile cutter from Machine Mart. It's got a diamond blade and makes cutting 'L' shaped tiles easy. There's one just over £40 & my opinion is it's well worth it.

Switched fused connection unit with RCD?

Thanks ban, that's me sorted on this one then. I've only just discovered this forum; there are some good guys on it.

Switched fused connection unit with RCD?

OK, thanks plugwash for explaining the workings of RCD. Thanks also to ban-all-sheds for suggesting to just use the test button to isolate outside installation, so no additional DP switch is required as I had first thought. Nobody has answered my question about whether the 30mA RCD is...

Switched fused connection unit with RCD?

I understood how the RCD worked as regards the current imbalance transformer, but assumed that the test button linked live to earth. You are saying that the link is between live and neutral, presumably linked so that current flows through the winding on the live side but not through the winding...

Switched fused connection unit with RCD?

That will trip the RCD before the consumer unit as well though so all the house is then off.

Switched fused connection unit with RCD?

It's a 1960's house and the RCD was there when I bought it so I don't know how old it is. It definitely says 80mA on it though. It doesn't really matter if it's 80 or 100 because my question is because the whole house is not covered by a 30mA RCD do you all advise that I fit a Fused Connection...

Switched fused connection unit with RCD?

My house has an 80mA RCD between incoming mains and consumer unit. I want to wire some external lights and a pond pump - all mains voltage. I can fit a Fused Connection Unit as a spur off a ring-main socket on the external wall, and take the cable through the wall to a weatherproof junction box...
