Ok, I had to bite the bullet and purchase a brand new Greenstar 24Ri boiler! The thing is, I think the installer has got the plumbing connections wrong. Perhaps someone could confirm please? Looking at the boiler from the front, the return pipe, where he fitted the Magnaclean, is on the left...

I paid £150 for the boiler, it has been fitted by an accredited Worcester Bosch gas safe engineer. I have now taken out a 1 year (£300) service contract with Worcester Bosch who are coming around on Monday and will carry out any repairs necessary to get it working.

As I have been told that the fan in the boiler is also dead, I have taken out a £25 per month service plan with Worcester Bosch so I should get all the faulty parts replaced for a fixed price.

Thanks for the replies. The boiler was manufactured in May 2005 and I am not the first owner and have no paperwork relating to the purchase at all. Will this still be covered under warranty?
