    Death House

Interesting read, keep up at it. Im in a similar position, recently taken on a project which turned out to be way bigger than i expected. Owned by bodgers, not maintained, water leaks everywhere, finally can just about see the end in sight, then i can start looking for another :D Keep the faith...

Replacing Rad - Inhibitor or protector ?

Apologies for a hijack, but I've a similar question so added here rather than on a new thread. I have removed my bathroom rad, drained the system, and fitted new lock shields. How do I add the inhibitor? The bathroom rad won't be fixed on until I have finished refitting the bathroom, problem...

Kitchen Wall plaster Blown/Patchy Repair advice please

Thistle bonding and thistle multifinish. I'd make sure I remove all the blown plaster to 8mm (will be dusty). Then apply your bonding allowing a thin skim. Then skim. Bonding needs to set before applying the skim. Good luck!

    Fence post attaching

I have two options to attach a fence post to the side of the house. 1. Use a 16mm rawl bowl. This will involve cutting a 16mm hole though my render in probably two places. 2. Dig up the concrete and sink in a post underground. Obviously 2. will involve considerably more work and cost, but...

Kitchen Wall plaster Blown/Patchy Repair advice please

Depends on the depth of the damage. Skimming won't hold for long on just pva. A proper job would entail removing enough to allow your bonding plaster to give a good key, so take off 5mm , add bonding of at least 5mm, then a 3mm skim.

Where to even start! Damp everywhere, recommendations please

Some good comments from Tim regarding the breathing of the house. I guess you sre stuck getween a rock and a hard place. Personally I'd fix the chimney first as you have said you are getting water ingress. I have a similar problem with an extension and a leaking cement bellcast (which I hope is...

    Damp plaster

Remove all the render that sounds hollow. You might find there is none. If its just a crack in the render, chop out a channel along the crack and rerendering it with a sand cement mix with a dab of pva. When the frost hits the water behind the render and freezes, that's when your render will pop...

    Inside of Tanking Wet

Nothing, it is an outside brick wall. I reckon that once the foil backed plasterboard is attached to the wall, then there won't be condensation as it won't be able to reach it. I guess it's a n indication of how much water vapour is being absorbed into the raw render.

    Inside of Tanking Wet

Ive recently tanked a lower section of a wall, but noticed today after heavy rain the tanking is attracting the moisture. So the inside of the tanking is wet, but not the cement render. Does tanking attract condensation but the cement render is absorbing the moisture, im thinking as the tanking...

    Drain problem?

70s would be my guess as there were some renovations done about this time. The house is about 1880. Thanks. I spoke to a local builder and he recommended knocking out the clay pipe and filling the void with concrete. He said that the drain should of been filled with concrete and the pipes...

    Bathroom

Yes, i can see some holes from woodworm, not sure if they are active. Are the woodworm attracted to the wet environment, will they go away once the wet is removed?

    Bathroom

On lifting some floorboards showing damp spots, i came across this little surprise! Its a first floor bathroom. The major joist damage seems to be around where the toilet was sitting, i expect it had been leaking for years! I guess its a little warning to what damage a leaky toilet can do...

    Vapour barriers

I'm trying to understand what a vapour barrier is for in wall insulting and roof insulating and ventilating. Is it to stop condensation in the room reaching the wall? Protect the insulation? The plaster? What is the typical layout of a solid wall insulation upgrade to a room. Is it...

    Damp in the corner

Interesting article. So what is the correct render for outside waterproofing? 3 sand, 1 lime? It's quite surprising, I doubt anyone down here is even aware there cement renders are causing these problems, including local builders!
