    Part P and building control

:? Confusing! Presumably the builder's electrician was a member of a competent persons scheme and their scheme notified the LABC when the new lighting circuit was installed. I think you can extend that 'existing' circuit without notifying LABC but alarms are something else. The lighting circuit...

    Extending hot water circulating system

I'd like to know where the bronze pump should be? I have an unvented tank with the return coming into the middle of the tank. My bronze pump is on the flow side. I'd have thought it would be better on the return with a check valve to prevent back flow. It's only duty is to keep water circulating...

    Bath in Bedroom?

You could put in an en-suite bathroom from about 1.7m x 1.2m with bath and basin and 2.4m x 1.2m with a toilet or bidet. Add 0.1m each way for a double-ended bath. Depending on door position, you might have room for a walk-in wardrobe too.

    MCB trip problem

An MCB delay of a minute indicates it is the thermal element in the MCB that tripped. For instance, you might be drawing up to 10 A on a 6 A circuit.

    Floorboard/Joist Support

That sounds pretty unsightly for a roll-top bath. You seem happy to lift floorboards. Could extra noggins under the feet take the concentrated load? I might be tempted to screw a an extra 25mm floorboard across the floorboards underneath the floor and feet rather than on top. I've no idea if...

    Horrible old bath...

For a temporary solution, you could paint the bath now and save up to replace it if you stay long term. A google search threw up http://www.tubbyuk.com/enamel_bath_resurfacing_kits.htm I've no idea if it is any good though. Or, wait three months and see if you still notice it. ;-)

Soundproofing - Only 8.5cm space available

Thin vertical battens screwed to a flat wall to take the horizontal resilient bars. Just thick enough to prevent screws through resilient bars from touching the wall behind and to allow 25mm acoustic mineral wool behind the bars. The resilient bars can be attached through the battens directly to...

How to supply a draw of > 13 amps on a socket - possible?

Maybe the 'bare' lead originally had a 16 A Continental plug. I think 15 A round-three-pin plugs are still legal. Put that on a distribution board with a 15 A semi-enclosed fuse...

How best to insulate my new garage?

I get the impression that concrete is less permeable than brick, so I don't know if you need to protect mineral wool from penetrating damp. For BRICK single skin walls, you could use treated mineral wool slabs like Crown DriTherm that don't 'wick' water from the outer skin. A polythene vapour...

why do electricians question the competence of DIYers?

On the other hand, I have seen too many professional howlers ever to trust a sparks fully. For example, a council appointed inspector advised I used 10mm² earth (rather than 16mm²) from TN-C-S to CU and run bonding from the CU's installation earth terminal. He told me that METs are no longer...

    How to treat this cable

With the live conductors so far apart, I wonder if it has a higher current carrying capacity than PVC T+E?

Soundproofing - Only 8.5cm space available

19mm thick battens, 10mm thick resilient bar, 25mm thick plasterboard (2 layers of 12.5mm Soundbloc) is less than 85mm. Put 25mm of acoustic mineral wool behind the resilient bars and seal edges with acoustic sealer. Add a 3mm rubber damping layer between the plasterboard layers. I've read...

So much for consulting the rating plate !

Some people go to town on freezer supplies; SWA cable to socket and no RCD. A 'protective' device tripping can cost £100s in damaged food or poisoning. If the cable is 1.5mm², wouldn't that be right for a 13 A fuse?

I was thinking of amateur as non-professional

How best to insulate my new garage?

What's wrong with bouncy? How cosmetic or structural does it need to be? How about just 25mm Celotex (PIR) on the joists and between the pillars held in place with battens with screws through the PIR into the walls? Silver surface means work lighting will be a doddle.

    Oven Wiring

Not really. If it doesn't have fancy cleaning cycles, you might get away with it. It really ought to be on a cooker circuit. Do you have an electric cooker control unit?

Conflicting Opinions - a Low Loss Header or not?

With a plate heat exchanger you'll probably have two independent circuits; the original radiators on the open-vented circuit and the boiler together with the hot water cylinder on a new sealed circuit.

    Troublesome old heating system

If the boiler house is an outbuilding, it should have a frost 'stat. In cold weather, the boiler can run continuously to protect itself from freezing. I wonder if that might be part of the problem. My frost 'stat was set to 5°C but actually turned on at 10°C. It might be worth checking yours, if...

Conflicting Opinions - a Low Loss Header or not?

You missed one, a sealed system's extra pressure may cause your old pipes and radiators to leak, so you might want to keep the header tank for the radiators. (If you already have any leaks, the header tank will be compensating.)
