    Joining wood

Been thinking about sorting out my garage roof and merging two garages. Trouble is I will end up with a 5.5m (long) x 6.6m (wide) structure so am thinking of doing a plain single lean (lean-to/shed type) roof. I was thinking of using multiple 47x100mm lengths. They are 3.5m (in wickes)...

    IPX8 and fishies

No, my house has got no RCD whatsoever. Just an old Wylex fuse box. The CU is in the pipeline to do as I have a new shower to put in, I dissed the old one as it just buzzed and was only protected by a 30A mcb. First thing that gets it in a typical central heating house wont be the water...

    IPX8 and fishies

It is hard to weigh up any potential risk but I got some £6 plug in rcd's (they are BSxxx and CE and look ok so hopefully quality) and my 3rd tank I wont bother with. I was only really concerned about the 2 the kids can get too, plus one (only one) of my aquarium tank leaflets recommends it.

    IPX8 and fishies

Pump looks quite safe and would be hard to break. Not sure if you seen one but the Heater is like a giant test tube. Not hard to crack one of these and not realise. It has a rubber bung type seal at the end you can move it too. Not sure if they are internally sealed

HIV and HEPATITUS from the yanks

Of course it is heir fault, not sure of the mechanics of how all that was supposed to be done but its most terrible, Otherwise you are getting into a debate about the sources of blood donour

    IPX8 and fishies

Whats your guys opinion on IPX8, got 4 fish tanks and one is open topped. They all got IPX8 pump and heater in both of which are 240v. What if a heater got a crack (its in a glass housing)?? Would it just short out the L&N and blow the fuse? Pump is protected by 3A fuse. Just...

    Christmas lights.. aargh near disaster

Of course the baby gets watched, but most 2yr olds will be left in a room on their own for sometime, and as its so easy for this simple thing to occur. Hmm.. considering what happened in this case Id recommend everyone takes precautions! I never thought a baby would go over and bite a bulb...

    Christmas lights.. aargh near disaster

Interestingly to get behind my xmas tree you are up against a large radiator, this is still painted though so.. ?? So are the older in-series lights still available new now?

    Christmas lights.. aargh near disaster

Yeh hopefully! :) Although im not sure id want to chance it, just couldnt beleive how easy it was. Yeh granted it is hard to prevent this but it really amazes me that they have allowed lights like this to be put on sale in the first place. Why not low voltage transformers or similar. You...

    Christmas lights.. aargh near disaster

Totally agree. Why this wasnt thought about when they done safety checks for whether they are allowed to sell these. I assume they do check these things! Crazy, so easily done though and I bet the member of staff didnt have any idea this could be dangerous. Probably been done...

    Christmas lights.. aargh near disaster

Thats how I read that the RCD works, by detecting the difference between the L N phases. The earth path is to blow the fuse. There will still be a path to earth through the baby! (for RCD) Definately LEDs next year, but as the Consumer Unit is in the pipe to be done ive got even...

    Christmas lights.. aargh near disaster

Thinking of fitting an RCD unit to the plug socket of the christmas lights next year (if I havent sorted my wire-fuse Consumer Unit to an RCD one) My 2 year old daughter went behind the christmas tree, fascinated by the lights bless her, and put one of the bulbs in her mouth and completely...

    Consumer unit fuseway / ring-main

If the house has a proper PIR and all that, plus isnt a ripoff price then I agree it would be easier. If it was just the shower swap (and already a decent CU) then I would just do it. Its really comes down to the fact if 1)I want LABC to just come and inspect my work OR 2) I want a full...

    Consumer unit fuseway / ring-main

But if I installed a CU and got it cert'd as well as the shower and general house electrics (assuming they would do that all the same time) that would only cost me 100 quidish in labour. Surely a spark would charge more than 100 quid to install a CU (+ say 75 quid for a CU)

    Consumer unit fuseway / ring-main

Looks ok, I have changed a few ceiling roses that looked rough with frayed wires sometimes with insulation missing. Lots of sockets that I would want to change for cosmetic reasons but everything works and nothing seems dodgy. CU has correct rated stuff for Ring, lighting etc.. But as I know...

Wouldnt the post install inpspection do that?

    Consumer unit fuseway / ring-main

I really wouldnt mind paying 100 quid odd to make sure its all ok. If I installed a CU would they need to actually disconnect circuits to check them? I think I best give them a ring really, thanks for pointing out the part P bit as I often see the local council messing stuff up, not sure...

    Consumer unit fuseway / ring-main

Not sure if i am allowed to resurrect my thread :) If I swap over the CU and obviously do a good job on the terminations and make sure all the circuit are setup proper would you see any other essential need for any other tests? I also want to get the shower sorted (old one still in...

My biggest shock yet.....Always prove dead!!

I had an argument/discussion with a guy about this. He knew his stuff pretty good about mains (had some electrical qualifications that he was ok to do mains work in a school). He seemed to think that as you could measure a low resistance over an ohmeter across two hands that a 12v battery would...

My biggest shock yet.....Always prove dead!!

probably means when shorting the postive to the chassis, sometimes the positive is quite close to the wing of the vehicle or some other negative chassis point. You can also do this quite easily with starter motors as they bave a perminent positive attached etc...
