    Ring Main Regulations

I have now bought a multi meter. It has a big orange dial on the front which I can use to set DC V, DC mA, and AC V etc. This is what I think I have to do to check ring mains pairing: Switch off consumer unit. Remove two lives from downstairs breaker, and two lives from upstairs breaker...

    Ring Main Regulations

Hi, I have finally worked out that my ring mains are connected wrongly. The live for the downstairs leaves the downstairs marked breaker, and the other downstairs ring main live is wired into the upstairs breaker ( or vice versa). This means that when I switch off one breaker the whole...

    Bathroom Fan

The fan I have is currently mains voltage situated near the door. Its just a basic 15l/second. I read somewhere that if its near the door it just sucks air up under the door and out. I have cleaned the vent, pipe etc. Fan is operated by switch outside ensuite. I wanted to keep this one to...

    Bathroom Fan

Hi, I have major condensation problem in bathroom and was thinking of installing a low voltage extractor. This is in addition to a mains one which I reckon is in the wrong place. My plan was to take a "spur" from the mains one into the low voltage one so when switched on from outside the...

    Ring Main Regulations

Hmmm - I think I need to call in the professionals as I removed the cover and the breaker that I have switched off has three lives coming out of it. The breaker which covers all the sockets in the house has 2 lives coming out of it. Have no clue where the three lives are going. Maybe my house...

    Ring Main Regulations

Thanks - if I switch off one breaker the whole house sockets go off. If I switch off the other one, nothing happens. If I switch off the RCD the whole house sockets go off. Both the MCBs are green, although I dont know what rating. I haven't removed the cover as I am not sure how safe it is...

    Ring Main Regulations

My house is about 6 years old. I have always suspected, but now just confirmed that my entire ring main (downstairs, upstairs, and the garage) are wired into one MCB. This MCB is protected by an RCD (?) There is another MCB marked "sockets" in the distribution board but I have switched this...

    2 way switching

Thanks guys for all your help. Got it working as per your ideas. My whole house lights are wired as I described with the common looping through each switch, negatives connected behind each switch in a connector. Is this unusual?? Hope not! Cheers again

    2 way switching

Hi, Trying to install a second switch for 2 way switching. My current switch has 2 reds in common, one red in L1 and the blacks connected behind the switch in a cable connector. How do I wire my 3 core and earth into this switch set up and into my new switch for 2 way switching? I have...
