    Broadband Wiring

Thanks Everyone. Still wasn't working last night. I rang my ISP to check everything was OK with my account. They said my account was OK, but would quickly double check the line was ADSL enabled too. All came back OK. So I tried once more and Hey Presto it was working 5 minutes after I...

    Broadband Wiring

Thanks. I work in IT so the router setup side of it is OK. It is showing as not connected to the internet, and clicking connect causes it to hang. I dont have any logs to see why. I haven't tried it from a different socket, but the socket that is not working is not the one that the front was...

    Broadband Wiring

Hi, My broadband has worked flawlessly for over a year. We have a plasterer in at the moment and he has loosened the front of one of our telephone sockets. I noticed last night that my broadband has stopped working upstairs, not on the socket he loosened. However, I've checked the wires...

Bending skirting around a bay window

Sounds a neat trick with the rope. Will all skirting bend that far, or does some of it snap? I'd assumed it would just snap if I even tried to bend it, but admittedly I haven't as yet. I'm also assuming the thinner skirting the better, or does it have the opposite effect? I read some...

    MFI Products at Howdens

Thanks. I'm not quite ready to do the kitchen but I had planned to soon. Aren't they already reassembled rather than flat-packed as well? Will look into it at the time though. Just need to persuade someone to open a trade account for me.

    MFI Products at Howdens

No, they only do kitchens. That is what I was told anyway. How much cheaper than MFI are they BTW?

Anyone any idea what this is??

Found this since my last post. It looks like the 2nd Crystaline type to me. http://www.aldonchem.com/popup-ab-efflorescence.htm

Anyone any idea what this is??

Thanks. The word harmless was news to my ears. I've done a bit of googling though, and it appears to be a more common problem outside rather than inside, and also states that it needs water in order for this to be created. I also note from the pics I have seen on the web it seems to look like a...

Bending skirting around a bay window

We have a round (not hexagonal) bay window. I need to replace the skirting around the bottom of this, which has been bent around the bay somehow. How is this done, or is it special skirting specifically for this purpose? If it is bent does it have to be a certain thickness in order not to...

Anyone any idea what this is??

We had some damp coming down from our ceiling on our dining room. This seemed to be folowing some old electrical truncing which was non-galvanised. I have now removed the trunking as advised by our plasterer and am about to replaster. However, he also suggested checking the floor void above...

    Drilling into damp proof membrane

Yes and No. It was/is structural, but has an RSJ in it. The wall I'll be building will be to replace some wooden french doors, so it shouldn't be supporting anything.

    Drilling into damp proof membrane

Thanks for the response. Checked and the bricks should be about £50. I will look into what is involved. I might just pay my local builder to do it for me though - not sure I fancy my first ever wall to be part of the house.

    Drilling into damp proof membrane

Softus, A few questions: Assuming I did decide to have a go at this, what would the cost in breeze blocks be for a 2.4M * 2M wall? What mixes do I need for the mortar? Does the wall have to be joined to the rest of the wall with anything other than just mortar i.e. does it have to be...

    Drilling into damp proof membrane

"The width of french door is quite a bit and if the stud wall is not fixed at the bottom it would tend flex rather a lot. So wrap the bottom member of the stud with the damp course then fix a non porous batten to the floor either side of it. That would stop the flexing no need to fix the stud to...

    Drilling into damp proof membrane

Its internal. I've anchored the frame at the sides and top, and the bottom doesn't seem to move at all. Will see what happens when the boards are attached but I'm confident it should be OK. Thanks all.

    Drilling into damp proof membrane

Thanks For your advice, even if I am about to ignore it! I'm afraid I'm gonna have to stick to a partition wall. I've never laid bricks in my life, and dont really have the time to learn at the moment. Need this build before the weekend. Looks like I'm going to include some acoustic...

    Drilling into damp proof membrane

I'm building a stud wall purely as it will be easier and quicker for a DIYer. I dont fancy the idea of bricking it up. My other option would be to anchor the frame at the sides only, and maybe at the top if I can drill into the RSJ - see my other posts on this one. Is that likely to be an...

    Drilling into damp proof membrane

I am in the process of building a stud partiton wall. It is to block up french doors in what was once a solid brick wall on ground floor. I will be drilling and screwing the lower beam of the wall frame into bricks at ground level, which already have a damp proof membrane on them. I will also...

    Soundproofing Stud/Partition Wall

What is the best thing to use as sound insulation within a stud/partition wall? I want to try to isolate the sound from the two rooms as much as possible? Thanks
