How hot can your house get?

So today i thought i'd do an experiment and crank my heating up as high as it will go and see how hot my house actually gets (thermostat set to 30c) I've noticed before that the radiators get hot fast and kick out heat, but it seems to take an age to heat the room up. When i replaced the...

vertical hot water cylinder laid down

Good point, to be honest I had never considered it in that way. The problem I can forsee in getting it stood up is that the top of the cylinder could easily be higher than the cold tank which feeds it, or not far off. Im tempted to get rid of it and have a little 10l mains fed electric...

vertical hot water cylinder laid down

Finally got around to looking at this again today after a year of finding other things to occupy my weekends. I took the advice and capped off the domed end, has had no noticeable effect, so now: cold water goes in the bottom where it should and hot comes out the top where the overflow pipe...

induction hob and electric oven wiring...help needed

A lot of induction hobs have limiters, especially the budget ones. This means that if you add up the rings power individually you might get something daft like 8kw but it has a maximum at any one time of 5kw so it will not allow all the rings on full power at once

    Street lighting

nope, these will have to be on a metered supply. And the councils don't like repairing lights that are on 24/7 (known in the trade as dayburners) because it costs them, and they aren't charged for the extra electricity anyway

    Street lighting

yes most of the street lights in the UK are un-metered. The new LED lights often have built in technology to the LED drivers which determine the date and time of day based on when the photocell switches on / off and can dim at the correct time accordingly. search "Philips Dynadimmer" or...

    Electric cooker installation

the best thing to do is to fit 6mm2 cable from the outlet to your cooker, that way the cable is protected correctly by the MCB, you could use 4mm2 on a 32a but for the couple of quid difference you'll be better off with 6mm. worst case scenario there is you turn everything on at once and it...

    Balancing Act

i left the the speed of the pump at number 2. the difference at the boiler is 15 degrees. The flow is 74 but at the radiators is 71 and return at radiators is 60 and boiler return is 59, the pipes are currently uninsulated so this is sort of understandable. set to 15 i can hear the room...

    Balancing Act

Think I've finally managed to solve it now and have each radiator with a 10-12 degree difference :) Also when I set the thermostat to 15 in the mornings the boiler fires for a while then switches off for some time before re-firing, it's only when I turn the temperature upto 20 is it...
