    Tightening connections

Or in plain english, do you have grey PVC covered wiring or it is cloth or rubber covered? :)

    Sealing a bath

Firstly don't SHOUT! Taking off sealant is a labour intensive process. You'll just have to scrape it off. A stantley knife blade works well, but use it carefully. I find the type with snap off blades extended to maximum length out of the handle works well. Just scrape gently. You can also rub...

Use Sugar Soap to clean the walls. It'll help prepare the walls for painting.

    Alarm interference

You should try and keep mains wire at least 6 inches away from alarm wire, and where they have to cross do it at 90 degrees only. Not an absolute rule but a guideline which should cover most eventualities.

    DIY fit of Burglar alarm.

Plus if you're using PIRs there is the location of them to take into account. They can't just be placed anywhere.

Painting skirting boards - carpet removal?

I use 50mm masking tape, making sure that the edge is tucked into tight against the wall. Quick to lay, quick to pull up after the job. I don't let much paint get onto the tape anyway but it helps keep the paint off the carpet close to the skirting board. So long as the paint doesn't drip, and I...

    slope of guttering

Yes it can, and also down to not knowning that it's wrong since the "builders" installing the gutters won't be experienced but cheap labour. On conservatories it doesn't matter too much about level gutters since water will always find the lowest point - the down pipe and it's never that far...

    Do TRVs work?

From my experience that doesn't mean much. A brand new house is likely to have a number of problems (mostly minor) because the builders are usually more interested in getting the house finished quickly than on getting it done right. A second hand house however will have had all the bugs ironed...

    Removing wallpaper

When using a steamer don't keep the steam head in the same place too long otherwise you'll hear the plaster pop away from the wall meaning a repair job. Keep the head moving over a small area until the paper's been soaked. Don't think that you've got to keep the head in the same place to ensure...

    Water in tile cutters

Too much hassle to go outside every time you need to cut a tile. I cut inside but use some old towels and dust sheets to work on. The dust sheets also keep all the tile chips so not much clearing up afterward. The water is not much of a problem at all. A bit gets on my leg when freshly filled...

    Routing plasterboard?!

All that plaster dust will wear out his router in double quick time. An expensive way to make channels in plasterboard.

    Outside Security Light

I would put it on the ring via an FCU. Even if the current light is not a 500W job, there is no guarantee that someone in the future is not going to change it for one, so to play safe do it via the ring main.

    Ring/Radial Help

Pulling out the wires from the wall and following them back to the fuse! :) A radial usually means your sockets are wired up in a star configuration where all the sockets are on seperate wires, all of them leading back to the fuse box. A ring circuit has a wire coming into the socket and...

    Ring/Radial Help

Is it a electric hob and oven or just an oven. An electric oven can be run of a 13A plug. An electric hob needs a it's own heavy duty cable from the CU (or in your case the fuse box). Does sound like you've got a radial wiring system especially if you've got an old style fuse box.

    Another Worktop Jointing Question

Some jigs/templates are limited to 600/650 but others can do a wide range. Trend do some very good but expensive ones, they're even available from the larger B&Q sheds.

    Rough price for new guttering.

You'll be talking a few hundred not thousands. Your house value and the area doesn't make the slightest difference to the price. Depends on how much guttering though. It's a simple job if the scaf is up. Just make sure that the drop on the guttering goes the right way - to the downpipe! The...

    Rewire Completed

It's a light that flashes to indicate that electricity is being used! I suppose it was designed in to show how fast power is being used (faster rate of flashing means more ooooomph) since there is no dial spinning round at a rate of knots when you have everything switched on.

1 Damp spot and one "salty spot"

Rising damp does not rise up to first floor level if you do have it. It only rises about a metre max. The Lounge problem could be rising damp, but if you've got damp in a bedroom (is it the same external wall) then it could be water seeping through the wall. How old is your house? In other words...

Laying lino on top of tiles

If you put the line straight on top of the tiles, you'll find that the tile grout lines will show through. I'd put some hardboard down first and then the lino on top. Make sure the hardboard is nicely butted up, use some decorators caulk to help smooth out any gaps that do appear between the boards.
