Interim W'pfing single skin exterior blocks prior to render

Is more information needed, or is this one a bit below you guys? Do you think I can render on top of this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/sika-waterproof-coating-5kg/83502#product_additional_details_container Cheers Tom

Interim W'pfing single skin exterior blocks prior to render

Hi guys, I really need to find an interim solution to hold back the damp from coming straight through the 4" block wall when we have any rain from that direction. The wall will be rendered in the new year, but I'm desperate to move stuff back into the garage and out of the kitchen before I...

    Loft conversion noise issue

In the grand scheme of things i'd damage the plaster reveals on the windows with screws/nails/foam and fully block the velux windows up to see if they really are the worst culprit. It is only a bit of filler and a paint to cover it back up after.... Tom

    Bike Shed foundations

As there's every chance the existing 50mm of concrete doesn't have a dpm (not saying that is needs one), I, personally, would take this as an opportunity to rip it and and do it properly. Tom

HELP - TV bracket fitment - is it safe

The wall is made up only of plasterboard: it isn't that uncommon. Consider making/ordering a bracket that hung from the timbers in the ceiling instead. /_/_/_/_/_ _|_ |_| Tom

Damp on internal wall above skirting

Yes, I think it is! That is a really good shout - I'll let them know and ask this old man to tie that up! Thank you Tom

Damp on internal wall above skirting

I hadn't thought about the central heating, and now you mention it a lot of it was (seemingly) buried in the walls. I don't have a meter. I'll have a word with the old man and see how often he has to bleed the system! Thanks Tom

Damp on internal wall above skirting

Hi, and thanks for your reply. Drainage around the property looks fine. There are gulley's that lead to (unblocked) soak aways which also carry the rain water from the roof... This internal wall is 3.5m from outside ground, so I'm struggling (although not ruling out) to understand how it...

    Damp penetrating through shallow cavity

Hi, Rightly, or wrongly I put it inside and out. I kept it below the external finished floor (gravel) and about 450 above inside - but then I was dot n dabbing insulated plasterboard inside too... Tom

    Damp penetrating through shallow cavity

I'd remove the dirt against the wall and apply a liquid dpm, let it dry, then back-fill with washed stone. This worked in our place. Tom

Laying a new concrete floor in garage age - Advice please.

Personally, it is only a garage - pick the straightest piece of timber you can find in the local merchants and just tamp it... Tom

Damp on internal wall above skirting

Hi guys, My parents have an old place that was partially rebuilt a decade or two ago, and some of the original walls don't have a proper DPC. It is one of these internal rubble-filled stone walls that has a 3m wide damp patch up to 200mm above the skirting creating a 'tide mark' that is an...

What do I need to break up concrete this thick?

I'd like to stick my cheapo Titan breaker at that just to see, as it makes light work of 8" deep footings... It is an alternative if you've got other jobs to do in the future, but don't get me wrong, it isn't a patch on those hydraulic breakers you'd hire, but mine soon paid for itself. Just...

Chasing 15mm pipe into 100mm single brick wall

I chased out a single skin internal brick wall with a ginger and my the dust!! That said, we'd previously removed all the plaster and lathe ceilings so it was just 'another messy job' in the house we were living in! My plasterer advised me to cover the pipes (plastic) with expanded metal...

    Laying Underground Drains

When BC looked at mine they just wanted to check it can all be rodded, and that it had a fall. There isn't much to test. Tom

    Laying Underground Drains

OP - you're best of making a good sketch IMO and use, say red for one option, and blue for another. I for one am finding it hard to picture what you mean exactly at the end of a long week... Tom

what slab arrangement for a 3 storey timber frame house?

I'm pretty sure they can't make you fit a proper one, or even inject one. I don't believe (though I stand to be corrected) it will even be the slightest issue with them. Floor - no idea. It might well be strong enough, but...? Tom

    Loft conversion floor joists

Look into 'engineered i beams' - these can span some very impressive distances and you may be able to, like you can with an engineered roof truss, get a floor designed for you without having an SE involved. I.e the suppliers spec will be sufficient to satisfy the BCO. It is just an idea, as I...

NEWBIE ALERT - Side extension, drains concern

We didn't - I basically estimated the costs and lined up a digger and driver, paid the council and got on with it. We don't have any plans other than those in my head or on bits of rough paper - not that i recommend it, but it is working out very nicely at the moment (I'm tiling the roof...

NEWBIE ALERT - Side extension, drains concern

OP - You've just described our house (and probably god knows how many others), and the extension we're building. We spent way more on the ground works than expected (mostly self-build on builder notice) - it really is an area to do you home work on (hence you post!). We excavated in the...
