if you are thorough, why havent you hired the relevant test equipment prior to powering it up? testing is being thorough, and why does your post read as if the consumer unit only has 1 RCD? to create the split did you use RCBOs for some circuits? do those work when you press the test button?

    RCD Test button wont trip

I would beg to differ, a competant person would not power up circuits in somebody elses house after swapping a consumer unit without prior testing! Test equipment is readily available for hire, there is no excuse for not using it, even if you dont intend on notifying.. there is no excuse for...

Using American 16 AWG wire for UK lighting?

Thanks for the pics, have to say its a nice light :) never seen one like that before. I can see it looks like originally it had a plug on it? Flex is what you need on that for the internal wiring. Twin and Earth wont do for that, but you would as you asked need to connect into twin and...

Bless him - Billy, DIY SOS

hard to say without seeing lower half, but looks like there is possibly a socket on a 2.5mm ring located on the wall below that switch, so he has run the cable from the socket up the wall to a ceiling void, then located the light switch next to the vertical run for the socket...and grouped the...

    DNO Needed

Because if they are still a trainy I think that their supervising electrician should be advising them on what they can and cant do, because they as the qualified one are responsible for the work and signing it off.

    DNO Needed

have to say without sounding funny, so I apologise... but even for a trainy electrician who should either be currently studying, or under the supervision of a qualified electrician as an apprentice. the questions being asked, seem to be bordering more DIY and a lack of knowledge about what...

Using American 16 AWG wire for UK lighting?

not all us cable has a ground conductor.. but could be wrong, I dont live there. but if they have a ground conductor why do they insist on still using 2 pin plugs everywhere in the house, and only 3 pin plugs on certain appliances like air conditioners. MOT equivalent is news to me, so I...

Using American 16 AWG wire for UK lighting?

I wouldn't call America the most health and safety concious, when it comes to that this country has them beat and probably most countries. If America doesn't even have anything similar to an sva, or mot then they can't be that worried about safety lol. But the cable is dangerous here, for...

Using American 16 AWG wire for UK lighting?

Only problem is... American electrical standards aren't as strict as ours, so in many respects its hard to say if it is actually better quality or not. A few reasons why I say that, No earth on most appliances.. With the exception of 1 or 2. All connections by their rules should be...

best way to connect swa to T &E within adaptable box

I know, this is a duplicate thread and should be merged with the previous thread as there was a lengthy discussion on termination. If I can remember the connectors themselves although maintenance free arent maintenance free certified because of the lack of cable support. but inside a...

Using American 16 AWG wire for UK lighting?

US wiring does not comply with our regulations here! for one thing, US wiring is White and Black? with no earth wire? they dont use earth wires on their appliances, apart from the exception of some appliances like air conditioning units. our regulations require twin and earth in brown...

best way to connect swa to T &E within adaptable box

Only way you can satisfy the regulations right now without a hatch is to use a maintenance free connection solution inside the adaptable box, like crimping and heatshrink or wagos. Otherwise it should be accessible, which is ok if you can pull up floorboards but not ok if laminate or hardwood...

    Trimming RCBO Tails

Hi, Just thought id bring this up, because in the instructions for RCBOs there doesnt seem to be any mention about if its ok or not... and online on various forums the oppinion is once again split if its ok or not. Personally cant see any problem as long as a crimped ferrule is applied to...
