How do I fix this safely?

Decided to investigate the dodgy cable. Didn't like what I found! I've got 10mm squared (no earth!) connected to God knows what (anyone know what that is?), looks like rubber coated wire wrapped with brown fabric. This emerges from the ceiling in the Kitchen as 6mm sq white PVC T+E ! I did check...

Thanks Securespark, I really do want to do it right. Steve.

    30A junction box question

Thanks for the comments. I do see your points. The cable in question is in fact damaged within 4 inches of the CU and I will make the Junction box visible. I would replace the cable if it were easy enough to do but it is in plaster without any slack. I could replace the MCB with a 25A one if...

    30A junction box question

I want to repair a damaged cable using a 30A 3 terminal 4x6mm sq MK junction box. The damaged cable is 6 mm sq protected by a 32A MCB feeding a 5kW double oven. Is this acceptable or not? I know that the total load current will not exceed 22A in use. But a fault current could exceed 30A...

Thanks Securespark. Just checked at the local library and they don't have it. I guess I'll try another library.

    Kitchen Wiring

About to rewire a kitchen, have informed BCO etc. Just wanted to know which regulations can be consulted for the positioning of the sockets. I have read that sockets should be no nearer than 300mm to a hob or sink but where does that come from? I want to consult those requirements in more...

Earthing a light switch-do I have to find a lighting earth

Surely it is still better to be earthed in some way rather than not earthed at all. A total rewire may not be feasible. Experts please comment on this. Steve.

    Double Socket height from floor

Not an extension. Just fitting a new kitchen in my old (1908) house including a new ring main. There is only one double socket at the moment and that is a spur off the upstairs ring main. I could go behind the radiator but would then have to de-rate the cable as the cable would get hot. Going up...

    buried cable near radiator pipes

Thanks for the reply. I will put a double socket at the same height as the cable run in order to define the safe zone. The cable should not get heated (well maybe a little) by the radiator pipes as they are clipped to the plaster surface. Steve.

    buried cable near radiator pipes

I want to run a 2.5 mm squared cable for ring main in a plastered over channel below a radiator. The radiator pipes are surface clipped. Is there any required minimum separation? Steve.

    Double Socket height from floor

For the worktop area I will do as you suggest but I need to get the ring across a wall. That wall has a radiator fitted so I wanted to create a channel for the cables in between the skirting and the horizontal radiator pipes below the radiator. Unfortunately that will mean I have to place a...

    Double Socket height from floor

I plan to install a ring main in the kitchen. As part of the planning for that I wanted to make a safe zone just above skirting level (for running the T+E + equipotential bonding). To do this I was going to place a double switched socket just above the skirting. I read somewhere that sockets...

    Shower question!

Personally I would fit the thermostatic mixer. You should get a much better flow than that of an 8kW shower. I am considering doing this myself (when I finish my other list of jobs that is) although my shower is only 7 or 7.5kW. I did a bucket fill test (time to fill a bucket with water) using...

How do I fix this safely?

New split load CU will be fitted in April. It's a 100 amp main switch 80 amp RCD 12 way Wylex. Thanks for showing concern though! I've got the 'Leccy board' coming over in 3 weeks to fit my free 100A isolator and then I've invited the BCO to inspect when I start works in early April. Steve.

How do I fix this safely?

What kind of junction box can be used to connect the two pieces of 6mm squared T+E. I notice that the 30A junction box I just bought says 2 x 2.5mm and the cutouts are not big enough for the 6mm squared cable. Steve.

    main fuse

Call your electricity supplier and tell them that you want an isolator fitted between the meter and your consumer unit. Then there should be no need for you to remove the main fuse. I did that (phoned EDF energy) and they are coming to fit the isolator in 3 weeks time..at no charge ! Steve.

    New Consumer Unit

Hi All just an update. I phoned EDF energy again and told them I wanted an isolator fitting between the meter and CU. The nice Geordie lady then said she would liaise with the people who are responsible for that. She rang me back after five minutes with an appointment in 3 weeks time to have the...

Routing 32A ring main through floor joists

Good point Chri5. I should be able to clip it on the underside of the joists. I can't see that being a problem regarding safety...Other opinions on this approach are appreciated.
