    cooktop wiring USA

DISCONNECT THE COOKER NOW! What you have done is unsafe... you have provided no ground connection, and while it will work, it could cause an electric shock. Either call a professional (reccomended) or place a piece of wire between the red and white terminals, and connect the bare wire to...

Any luck with MPs or councillors?

I think the NHS needs a definite shakeup. If anything it's the PPPs that are a disaster. Howard's plans are a joke. Under his schemes, a broken leg would cost on average £5000 directly to the patient. What's the point in choice and improved services if noone can afford them? What Howard...

    Dimmer Question

I would reccomend you change it when you can, and that you don't use the lights for too often in the meantime. You can get 450 watt dimmers, and even 1000 watt dimmers. These dimmers are suitable: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/VL1000.html...

    cooktop wiring USA

I think you will need to wire in a new 240v circuit for it, as it is a 2-phase oven, and you only have split phase wiring.

    Low voltage Vs Mains downlights

and use a *lot* less electricity. They'll save much more in the long run.

    GFCI breaking

But surely it's tripping for a reason? EDIT: I just read about them coming from opposite sides. BTW, in USA they call 'Live' 'Hot', and generally call neutral neutral, but sometimes they call it 'Cold'. They used to call neutral 'Ground' and still do when not talking about wiring, and...

    Freeview

That reception predictor thing is okay, but it is a little inaccurate in places. For example, if I ask if for 'local' transmitters, it includes Teesside TV (doesn't do that for the next most southernly street), and Pontop Pike. But the former cannot be received at all here, and the latter...

ah, okay, but I think Igorian knows better.

    Concern over in-laws wiring

Hmm... Most people I know with 60amp supplies have no problems running electric showers. I would say a 60 amp supply can handle either an electric oven and hob, or a shower, but not both. It seems to be when there are two high wattage devices, that the problem over going over the rated supply...

    Split Load CUs

Split load CUs split the load so that you can have some circuits on an RCD, and others not, all in one CU. It is tidier than having two CUs, with RCD and non RCD. As for what the RCD is it depends whether or not you have a 'TT' supply. Identify your supply type. As you can see...

    GRUNDIG TV

My Grunding TV has exactly the same problem. If you bang it on the top it temporarily sorts out so I am suspecting a dry joint. We moved it from the living room to the basement for a while, the movement seemed to sort it. Now its in my bedroom and its started doing it again, so I'd...

    Shower fuse reccomendations

Yes, you require a 40 or 45 amp fuse or mcb. You should also check that suitable cable has been used.

    Re-siting a meter/CU

Bloody privatised electric companies... :| :x   :( And censorship: The Korean war was a tragic, and very bloody imperialist battle. haha.

    Spur Advice

It doesn't matter if one's a spur from the other, you won't overload it like that. What does matter if one is a spur off a spur, which is not allowed, or if you plug the kettle and the oven into the same double socket.

Line voltages and plug type information

I don't know. Maybe the box where the three phase terminates into single phase supplies for me and the neighbours is actually a transformer like my dad once called it  On another note, I see the logic of that if you just read it on paper. For some reason we always seem to have...

    Spur Advice

What do you mean exactly? If you have the kettle running of a double socket, and then you spur a socket for the oven off that, then the answer is no. If you have them both plugged into the socket, then yes you would overload it.

    Low voltage Vs Mains downlights

I don't believe mains ones would be too much of a problem, no.

yeah, same problem here, I thought it was my proxy acting up, as it sometimes does with certain sites.

Line voltages and plug type information

Well, I read Belgium used to have DC supplies (170 volts?), in common use up until the 50s, so there's a bit of nonstandardness. 115 volts was chosen because it is the most efficient voltage when used with a tungsten incandescent lamp, 230 as we know because it's close enough to both 240 and...
