thanks masona - just the kind of thing i was looking for :O) oilman - yeah i was aware that the moisture would be trapped so i'm not entirely sure how to go about removing some of this damp problem - obviously the proper way to go about this would be get it sorted at source (i.e. outside)...

    Tanking??

yeah the quote was for inside work, and yes it needs to be sorted from the outside..... but at present we just can't afford that so we're looking at a temporary solution.... i was just wondering what this 'tanking membrane' was and whether it's worth doing for the short term. cheers

    thick paint?!?!?

cheers peeps (well apart from breezer as he seemed to be a bit "bah-humbug" - lol). anyway i ended up going for a fine filler and sanded down those areas it was applied to - it's a great improvement but still not perfect but it'll suffice for a few years :O) now what do you people know...

    thick paint?!?!?

yeah that's an idea - i'll place it on the dog leg so they can grab it on the way past....... that way when they hit the floor and open it up they can find loads of kitchen roll to wipe the blood up before it stains the floor the bathroom is already an A&E center (arachnid and earwig)...

    thick paint?!?!?

cheers masona - i'll look out for some of this fine filler stuff - yeah that's the stuff you can get different grades of 'sand paper' feel - i doubt it'll be too much of a problem if someone falls down them as they'd prob. crack their head open where part of the stairs ceiling sticks out - if...

    loft insulation

alrighty another question for all you loft gurus out there. had a bit of a better check in the loft last night (was checking the pipe lagging)... anyway i noticed that the current loft insulation goes right to the edge and then is curled up so it's actually resting on the roof tiles (if...

Removing a minor dent from a wooden table

i remember hearing/seeing/reading somewhere that if you put a folded damp tea towel over a dent and iron it, the steam will expand the wood back to it's original shape.... of course i've never tried this as i'm quite adept at using my digits to hold on to things  good luck

    Lino... more haste, less speed

LOL - well at least you can say to the misses 'I TOLD YOU SO' never mind - pretend to start work on the kitchen next week - then say you can't do anything without damaging the lino so it'll all have to wait - grab a beer and retreat to the shed

    damp proofing paint

cheers for the reply masona hmmmm i was hoping not to tackle the outside wall just yet as i just don't have the funds for such a manoeuvre - i was hoping to be able to paint the inside wall with some product that would temporary stop the damp from penetrating for a couple of years and then...
