Am I right to laugh at this?

I agree, lucretia, but this implies that the sale of all houses in the south west which have electrical work done on them, will be held up because there's nobody down here who is qualified to do the work. It's OK to implement new regs and stuff, but making it impossible to comply is damn...

Am I right to laugh at this?

This Part P business is a load of toss. In order to become a "competent person" and be able to "self-certify" my work, I have to pay a fee, sign a statement that I will comply with certain BS specs., nominate my supervisor (which, as a self-employed person, can be myself), show that I've...

    Router cutter quality issues

I think I've found out why some router bits are cheaper than others. I've noticed that some of the cheaper brands (not all that I've tried, just some) tend to burn the wood and don't leave such a clean cut across the grain. I can only assume that cutting tip angles are less precise. May be they...

routers - where to get a Convex edging bull nose

Frederico, I think Trend cutters are expensive. I've used several cutters from Data, and they seem to be very good - and 2/3 the price. Phone them up and get a catalogue 0845 2300299. They seem to have every conceivable shape: see www.datapowertools.co.uk I think the one you're after is £17...

The Hilmor has some markings on the bending wheel thingy which show 30deg, 45 deg, and 90 deg. Not like a stop, I know, but better than FA.

    PVA adhesive

What's the difference between Evo Stik (or similar branded) PVA wood adhesive (in the green bottle), and bog-standard bulk PVA adhesive that you buy in 2.5 litre pots from local builders merchants (Cromar brand, in my case) at a fraction of the price? Does the specialised PVA wood glue have...

    Tools

I bought a Hilmor recently from my local merchants. £40 incl VAT. Works absolutely fine with both 15mm and 22mm pipe. No complaints at all.

    Router set up for joints

That sounds OK, big-all. That would work with minimal test runs. (My router is a Bosch and has micro adjustment on the depth, to 0.2mm, so increasing/decreasing depth is easy) But is that how "The Professionals" do it, I wonder?

    Router set up for joints

I've bought a new router. It's a superb piece of kit. But I have a query regarding depth set up. If I want to create a cross-halved joint in, say, 3"x2", is there an easy way of setting the depth to exactly half way so you get a perfect flat face to the finished joint? I spent ages fiddling...

    SILVERLINE PIPE BENDERS(15+22mm)

May be the 22mm pipe you've got has been manufactured at a slightly lower temperature than the 15mm pipe? i.e. May be from a difference manufacturer, and harder to bend. I've noticed that older copper pipe has a greater wall thickness to what you get now, so may be that's another manufacturing...

    Router cutter quality issues

Big-all, I've already got the Router Box selection for exactly the reasons you suggested. It's better, too, because the foamy lined box will accommodate different cutter sizes that those supplied (i.e. they're not contained in plastic cutouts like the Argos one), as I develop my preferred sizes...

    Router cutter quality issues

Looking at router cutters, I have found varying prices for what are, apparently, very similar products. Trend cutters seem to be dearest, followed closely by Freud. On the other hand, I've just bought on of these http://www.routerbox.co.uk/detail.htm and they seem to be good quality and good...

cheaper tools from the USA ? read this first

I don't really understand anybody considering buying power tools from the US. It never occured to me to even consider buying from over there. I would only buy in UK as although prices might be higher (offset somewhat by seeking out bargains - like £300 Bosch GOF900CE router from Machine Mart for...

    Screwfix rubbish

Perhaps their new warehouse is in Tibet? That would explain the delivery delays (due to distance), the website closure (due to periods of praying), lack of understanding of their market (due to cultural differences), and inability to get straight answer (due to language barrier). And it isn't in...

    Screwfix rubbish

This is excellent stuff!! And all because Screwfix have no idea about marketing. As for what David & Julie said: "You don't get as big as Kingfisher if you don't know what you're doing", this is not necessarily a reflection of their success. Perhaps Kingfisher are only as big as they are...

    Screwfix rubbish

Off topic, I know (but since I started it....): A few years ago, as you drove out of London somewhere near where the A1 starts, there was a sign which said "The North". Someone had written underneath it "Turn back now". I don't know if it's still there. Getting back on topic, I've just read...

    Screwfix rubbish

TLC Exeter is only 20 minutes away from me. Also, it's worth noting that from TLC you can order cable (like meter tails and SWA) by the meter. You can only order fixed lengths from Screwfix.

    Screwfix rubbish

Breezer, I don't wholly agree with you, but AdamW sums it up pretty well. I have looked at it from the "other side" - I was a marketing manager for nearly 25 years, so I profess to know a bit about "the other side". Using your pub analogy, if a pub runs out of beer, it doesn't shut its doors...

    Screwfix rubbish

I have been an ardent supporter of Screwfix for a year or so, but now, no longer. Rubbish service and wrong products delivered have put me off. Now, you can only access their website "when it suits them". Well, that's fair enough, but no use to me. Can anyone suggest any marketing or PR benefit...

    New router

Thanks, Jason. When I said 6 or 12mm, I was trying not to show my age  I really meant 1/4" or 1/2". For general manual tasks (e.g. shelving rebates and cross half joints (using straight bits), and straight mouldings (using bearing bits)), I'm tempted by the lighter weight (i.e. easier to...
