    uPVC windows - alarm security

Hi, Just planning the wiring of the new alarm system on the windows; contact and vibration sensors, and wondered about these points ? Most of our upcv widows have fanlight openers, wondered how safe they are from burglars? I know a lot of folk leave them open, assuming the gap is too small ...

    Alarm Cable wiring on Upvc

Last time I looked at that trucking it was all the square type, but seems there is now a D shaped one in various sized, saw this micro one in BQ earlier and it looks very neat. Also saw these pieces of U channel on ebay, a good idea to diy some, if I can find some 4/6mm plastic channel.

    Alarm Cable wiring on Upvc

Hi, Am fitting wired contacts/sensors to some upvc widows, but some of the wiring (6c) will have to run down some central pillars, so wondered how to keep the cable neat and straight ? Could use superglue but know that will mess both the cable and frame if ever removed. Wondered if it was...

    Which Alarm control unit ?

Missed that one, though its only the Excel that has the LCD as well. Its another £10 more than the Honeywell, though not a deal breaker. The local supplier has several well priced part and full installation packages for the Honeywells but only the Texecom Excel control unit on its own or a...

    Which Alarm control unit ?

Thanks guys, Take the point about the LCD as these units do have a lot of settings that would be a pain using just the led indicators. Seems the Honeywell Accenta unit is available as a package with a lcd keypad for just £8 more than the basic Optima unit. As for future needs, think these...

    Which Alarm control unit ?

Hi, While looking at window sensors, as in the previous post, have seen some control units in a local trade shop which might seem like a good time to replace my aging one. They are both wired devices and am only looking at the basic control unit, no real need for extra lcd and remote keypad...

    Window Glass Alarms

Hi, Have 6ft and 4ft wide double glazed upvc windows, typically the 6ft ones have two outer main openers with a fixed middle pane and a small opener above it. Seems like the small stick on glass alarms might offer a good extra layer of security for the bungalow, but wondered what opinion was...

    upvc glass packers

Hi, Am about to fit my first upvc window, just a fixed pane 1000x800mm. When applying the side and top packers between the glass and frame, should they be a firm fit or should a small expansion gap be left ? Cannot find anything actually detailing this. thanks

    double glazing contract

Thats the bottom line... everything detailed in writing and even take pics of the samples shown. Verbal does have some legal standing, though harder to prove in a dispute situation. Expect the contact terms are standard, but no reason you cannot challenge them about any clause before you sign...

upvc window - delivery time ?

Hi, Ordered just one small (0.8 sq mtr) self fit upvc window from a local manufacturer who lead me to believe it would be a 3-4 day turn around. Appreciate its just a bit job for them , but now two weeks+ later still not done, is this typically a busy time of year, or should I cancel and go...

    Computer keyboard hazards?

Don't disargee with what you are saying; however think you are judging the OP too literally. If someone its operating a keyboard in that manner, without its cover, my question is what else have they done, bypassed fuses, wiring mods etc etc ? Unlikely you say, well not from my experience, you...

    Windows 10 Upgrade

I too like W8.1 and you do not have to upgrade to w10, it is optional if you check the screens; I will certainly not change until just before July 2016 when the 'Free' upgrade offfer ends by which time most of 10s bugs should have been cured. Still no clear indication what happens after July...

Windows 10 and Office Professional 2007

For the Office problem, would have thought your old 2007 version would have loaded ok, I had 2007 running fine on W 8.1 Have just moved to the latest Libre Office which is virtually the same and totally free, comes with a Dbase as well. Nothing to loose by trying it. https://www.libreoffice.org/

    Computer keyboard hazards?

Any electrical equipment removed from its outer casing is could be a serious risk; even a 5v USB keyboard. It you short circuit any part of such devices then you never know what may happen, or may not be around to find out ! Any reason you want to use a keyboard like this ? Most...

    Protecting VM outdoor Cable

This is the problem .... the plastic coverings will help protect from the cable rubbing on stones etc, but not a spade etc. Can only think that once with an extra covering of round split conduit , because VMs cable is an uneven figure of 8 , then to place some solid right angled or U shaped...

Can laptops use any2.5" sata HDD ?

It was my tower desktop that I first used one, making the SSD my C drive and the old HDD C drive becoming the D drive for data files. The speed difference was really dramatic , far better than any cpu or memory upgrade etc. It initially used this 60gb drive which still holds all my W 8.1...

Thanks, had see the flex conduit but not the split version, which seems more from trade suppliers than the diy shop.

Can laptops use any2.5" sata HDD ?

Not an expert on laptops, but the odd old ones I have looked at, seems they are generally compatible. What I would suggest you also look at when doing such an upgrade / repair is fitting a SSD drive instead of a HDD. The old laptop will seem like a new modern machine with all the extra speed...
