    More Showers

I remember once being told by a drip that they always use 6mm2 cable on a shower as it is easier to work with  He tried to use it on mine until I said he was putting in 10mm2 and I watched him do it.

Power supply for an above ground swimming pool

Sounds like you do need a spark in. Just tell them what you want and they will see to it. You will need an armoured cable with RCD protection for such an application. For prices - get at least 3 quotes and take it from there.

Power sockets in bedroom with shower

Sounds like mine. No probs as the shower is in another room. I didn't bother with the council part, just got a spark to wire up without that crap. Did a nice job too.

    Part P, The Aftermath

That is the point. People just aren't going to follow it and it will die in he long grass where it will end up. I laugh when I see advice on here whittering on about an obligation to inform before doing work when we all know full well that SFA will happen if we don't. Ask a beak how many...

    Part P, The Aftermath

But the point is that it is my house and my money. If I want to wreck the thing then it's up to me, not the nosy council. If I want to buy a Rolls Royce tommorow and smash it up for the hell of it, then that's my business. It may well be short-sighted but that's my choice. Besides, I may...

    Which split-load consumer unit / 45A shower

Or you could remove the fuse. If the cut-out is a modern type.

    Part P, The Aftermath

To be honest, and I know people here won't like it, 98% of DIYers won't have heard of it, and of those who have most will ignore it. And let's be honest, has anyone been prosecuted for breaching it? I'd bet the beak on the bench breaks it as well! On a more ideological level, as I see it...

Central Heating boiler connection to 13amp socket

I recently rewired a boiler that was connected via a FCU to a 20A radial that supplies a few sockets. Why did you do that? You might ask. Well, the FCU was fed from a J/B on the radial via a bit of 1mm lamp flex  which had started to singe where it can against the heating pipes. I'm...

What happens when it floods ??

Why pure or deionised water is a poor conductor, it can become a fair one if impurities such as salts are added. You may have seen the experiment at school in which a lamp was connected to a cell through a bucket of water. It fails to light untill common salt is added to the water, at which...

    virgin media / telewest box

Can't you jam a flat blade screwdriver in between some of the 'points' of the hex? I've certainly done this a fair few times to remove security screws.

    National Grid

Just wondering what sort of qualifications and training you need to work for them on HV lines, sub-stations and plant? Are their guys regarded as a breed apart from REC shift electricians etc?

    PAT Testing

Ask their safety guy if they want it. I do ask for it, but won't go mad if I don't get it.

Ok  Say he was in the RMEE?

    PME connection - who's resposible.

When I phoned Southern Electric because the seals were missing on my meter a few months back they didn't care and said electricians removed them all the time and that they would put some more on next time the meter was read. So it seems they tollerate it - in that area at least.

    irritating fan

I has a noisy fan in the bathroom. Took it down and disovered why: 1. the casing was craked and vibrating 2. the whole thing was loose in the ceiling, again vibrating. Solved it by: new fan, fitted into a wooden block.
