    BS 7671 and the novice

you have set the experience/expertise bar very low there. Sure it is possible it is just unlikely. There is the aspect of testing that will probably trip up a novice. The simplest way to complete the testing is with a lot of rather expensive test equipment : not exactly likely for a DIY...

Clarification of part P - simple work in a kitchen

not at all sure about that. Just how long will a standard BS1362 fuse take to open if it is carrying say 16A? How long if it was in use outside in these currently freezing temperatures? If you can't get more than 26A out of a double gang socket then you aren't trying hard enough. A word of...

    Lighting Wiring Please Help!!

You do have enough conductors to have two independent dimmable circuits with the three lamps split between the two dimmers. You can have the middle lamp connected to either dimmer but the two end lamps need to stay with their closest dimmers.

    Lighting Wiring Please Help!!

so the dimmer is a push-on push-off type with an independently settable dim level? All three lights in parallel Other switch acting independantly and toggling the state of the three lights?

    Lighting Wiring Please Help!!

before you go with what was suggested tell us what you expect/desire. There is more than one way of connecting the bits and as you have worked out some are more useful than others. Which pair of lights do you want to be paralleled? Which dimmer should control the pair of paralleled lights...

Fitting a shower pump- where to get the cold feed?

25 gallon is half the size of the tank fitted in our loft. From your opening post I was expecting something much smaller. I've just made a crude measurement on our low pressure shower: 4 litres / minute which gives an adequate but not invigourating shower. Probably worth measuring the flow...

Clarification of part P - simple work in a kitchen

probably in some articles in the IEE magazine at the time when part P was being considered/introduced. Certainly before 2006. Upto 1998 I used design high power high voltage equipment used in the production of memory chips so used to be conversant with lots of international requirements as well...

Clarification of part P - simple work in a kitchen

Hopefully I'm wrong about part P and my dislike of the legislation is ill founded. my understanding is that you can't change anything at all, with one odd exception: where a fitting is damaged. Anyone is allowed to replace damaged fittings which makes no sense to me. If we are all so...

Fitting a shower pump- where to get the cold feed?

Okay so the requirement is for a system with a pump and not just a working shower. :( How big is the current header tank? How much flow are you planning for this power shower? have you already decided upon or bought the shower head assembly? One of the reasons for having a large header...

Fitting a shower pump- where to get the cold feed?

Do you really need a pump? my shower head is a low pressure unit fed from the cold tank which is no more than 2 feet above the shower head. So do I get decent flow from the shower? Yes and No. Yes after I've cleaned the shower head, No after the inevitable buildup of limescale and...

Part P advice in a bathroom.

Not a fan of part P :(. But that is a different story. What you describe does not sound safe. The prospect of copper pipework connected to a bathroom becoming live as a result of a shower pump failure or cable fault within the airing cupboard would have me very concerned. The whole purpose of...

    washing machine hot shut down

Motor overload maybe, perhaps caused by a partially siezed bearing?? Not sure how the brushes would be at fault. Is it possible to rotate the motor by hand without any power applied? It should spin fairly easily.

    Cooker Hood ducting max length

4metres should be okay if you use the right fan. a quick search found the folowing unit. http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/DataSheets/SolerPalou/CK25.htm 140+m^3/hr flow No idea if that is sufficient ventilation to meet building regulations.
