Plaster on rising main causing issue

I’ve recently had my kitchen plastered (just a skim coat but thicker in places to fill some holes). The rising main has been exposed after knocking down a wall and the plasterer has plastered straight onto this (photo below). I have access to the other side of this wall which is where the...

What to use to fix 60kg+ column rad to wall

Yes really - I haven’t just made a random guess! it’s 109lbs empty. The link is here to the exact rad https://www.radiatoroutlet.co.uk/1800-x-470mm-white-vertical-traditional-3-column-radiator I’ve guessed about another 10kg for water but that bit is a guess. I think I’ll get a couple of feet...

What to use to fix 60kg+ column rad to wall

Hi - I have a 3 column, 1800 x 470 vertical rad to fit to the wall. It’s 50kg empty so I’m thinking about 60-65kg full. There are loads of videos / advice about fixing to a plasterboard wall but I’m actually fixing it to a brick wall and just want to check what fixings are best. it’s been...

Gurgling shower when toilet flushed and no roof vent for stack

Sorry just realised autocorrect in earlier post!! Should read “rodded” not “tossed”!!

Gurgling shower when toilet flushed and no roof vent for stack

The unblocking was free as part of my BG homecare agreement. He said pipes needed cleaning too (and showed me on the camera) which wasn’t covered on policy so I said go ahead and I’ll pay what’s needed. But he said he’d do it for a beer as it was his last job before weekend and not to worry...

Gurgling shower when toilet flushed and no roof vent for stack

As usual - your instincts were right! Thought I’d lift the inspection cover today just to check it was all ok and it was absolutely full to overflowing. So called dyno-rod who tossed and cleaned system and found a big 3” block or cement stuck in the pipe. All sorted now but thanks for your...

Gurgling shower when toilet flushed and no roof vent for stack

Hi - thanks for the last two replies - they both make sense and are very possible. I thought it seemed a bit dodgy only having an AAV so will look at installing a vent - don't think it should be too tricky as it's a flat-roof above the AAV. It is only the shower but, like you say, that's the...

Gurgling shower when toilet flushed and no roof vent for stack

No - all on first floor. We’ve had a new soil pipe installed downstairs ready for a new downstairs toilet with a new chamber attached to the existing manhole (Still just the pipe sticking out with no toilet fitted yet!) But that was done about a month ago and problem only started yesterday so...

Gurgling shower when toilet flushed and no roof vent for stack

:ROFLMAO: I wish! My house stinks of drains and poo water is coming up through my shower drain!! Not that posh :ROFLMAO:

Gurgling shower when toilet flushed and no roof vent for stack

Thanks - I thought I had pulled the top off (and a rubber diaphragm under it) but obviously not so will try again. Son’s a 16 year old teenager so the smell will just blend in with the others in the room probably! Detached house so no issue with terrace AAVs. Will pull top off in Morning and...

Gurgling shower when toilet flushed and no roof vent for stack

Since yesterday, we've developed a problem of slow draining toilets (there are 2) and when either is flushed, the water in the shower trap gurgles up. Looking on Google, the most common cause of this seems to be a blocked vent pipe but we don't have one - we only have an AAV fitted on top of...

How to find source of water hammer

PRV fitted in about 15 mins. Adjusted to 3.0 bar. Water hammer gone! Thanks for your replies.

How to find source of water hammer

Thanks again - going to try PRV first today (and will have to close stopcock for that anyway so will try that at same time) and if that doesn’t work I’ll have to trace the pipe and clip any bit that looks a bit shaky and hopefully that’ll sort. Thanks.

How to find source of water hammer

Thanks for the other replies. I think the tank and ball-cock are ok as it’s shutting off fine and it doesn’t actually cause the hammer when the tank fills and stops. I’ll try to stop-cock though just in case - I’m guessing you mean to just close it tight then open it? Not tighten the gland nut...

How to find source of water hammer

Great advice re pressure. Pressure gauge arrived today and shows between 6.5 and 7.5 Bar (changed a bit each time I tested but never below 6.5). So off to buy PRV tomorrow and hopefully that’ll fix it. Thanks again.

How to find source of water hammer

Thank you - that is a great suggestion I never thought of. There are 5 new houses that have just been built directly opposite our house and people have moved in about a week ago so that would make sense. I haven't got a pressure gauge but will pick one up from Screwfix and see what it says. I'm...

How to find source of water hammer

Thanks for the replies - no the bathroom is upstairs (with water hammer), kitchen downstairs (with) then back upstairs to the en-suite (without). You're right - I don't have a PRV, I just reduced flow at the internal stopcock. It's all the valves in the rooms mentioned including normal taps in...

How to find source of water hammer

Hi - for some reason, we've started having loud water hammer when most of the outlets are turned off. I've got quite good access to the pipes so can physically see it shake when something is turned off but I can't work out what's causing it as it seems to be nearly all of the outlets that cause...

    Fire boarding box steel

Hi - think I put this in wrong forum before - I've had some building work done and they've taken walls down and put steels up, including some box steels with 10mm plates welded on the bottom, above the new bi-folds. I'm fireboarding the steels before BC come to inspect again and I'm happy how...

How to fire-board a box steel with a plate

Hi - I've had some building work done and they've taken walls down and put steels up, including some box steels with 10mm plates welded on the bottom, above the new bi-folds. I'm fireboarding the steels before BC come to inspect again and I'm happy how to do the I-beams (wooden noggins etc)...
