    Identify object found in garden?

I have no idea what this is. I found it in my garden one night. It is very heavy. I thought DIYnoters might know what it is (not the teacup!):

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Yeah, I was thinking of charging them for all the bulbs and computers that have blown. Who knows how long it was dodgy for? My old UPS did used to do funny things, and I just put it down to being cheap. But seriously, I'm just glad they're not digging up my next door neighbours' drive again!

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Thought I would post an update. Things went quiet over the festive period, but the DNO did say they would be back to install a voltage recorder. I had to keep phoning them, and they said they'd get onto it. Anyway they were supposed to be here on Tuesday, but instead ended up digging up a street...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

DNO engineer just visited. Again. I showed him my graph and he checked out the supply. Says it dropped from 251 to 240 which he said is odd. He's recommending a voltage recorder. So hopefully we'll find out if it is as variable as the UPS is suggesting.

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Is it likely the UPS is not reporting the line voltage accurately? I do have a plug in meter https://energenie4u.co.uk/index.php/catalogue/product/ENER007 but without logging can't check on the variability. I've been noting values every time I go past, but can't overnight etc?

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Updated graph with annotations. Hope it is clear: I don't have a lot of ideas about the cause. We are somewhat near a railway line. We are also near Scotland's largest construction project: the new Forth road crossing. I asked the DNO engineer if that could be the source of the problem...

    Will do then.

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

The power guy said he'd checked the substation and checked the house input. Do we get onto them to install a voltage recorder then? To be sure there's a problem?

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Er okay. Then what is the solution? My UPS hasn't been acting up since they fixed it. Is it really something that needs investigating further? Are we talking get an electrician in to check wiring?

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Each reading is 2 seconds. Each curvy bit is about 1 day I guess.

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Actually I did go and get a plug in meter. Seems to be giving similar readings. Maybe not quite as high. But obviously I can't log the meter so it's harder to be sure. I also have a multi-meter.

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

I doubt I'm going to find out why it happened. Here's the latest voltages. I assume that it's fixed though. So must have been a problem outside...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Yeah well it looks like they might all have gone away. Just the diggers left and they say their job is filling in the hole. So may have missed my chance. I was going to say that the voltage looks pretty stable (between 235 and 250) but currently running at 260. I guess if I don't get to ask...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Ha. Even if they did I might not understand. I was just wondering... As it happens the electricity went off again and has come back and it seems a bit more stable. Between 246-256. Obviously it hasn't been long. I'll obviously ask them about it.... It is freezing cold and soaking wet. I'll...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

[/url] No idea... Just out of curiosity, what is the next step if nothing changes? Should I expect to see my line voltage come down to 230-240? Doesn't look much different at the moment....

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Power back. Dunno for how long. I have already said (though the thread is getting long), that the first APC UPS and second replacement one both acted the same. I thought the first one was faulty so returned it, and was surprised when the second one behaved in exactly the same way. I'm going to...
