Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

No issue. I had a UPS for two years, that worked fine. But it didn't switch to battery (and then shutdown when battery was exhausted) on high input voltage. When that UPS died (about a month ago) I purchased the first APC UPS. After testing it for 3 weeks I assumed it was faulty. Got a new one...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

The electrician wasn't here because of the voltage problems, but to install 2 new plug sockets. It was only after he'd gone that I worked out that the UPS was maybe not faulty. I don't really blame him for not noticing this problem. Who knows how long it's been like this? My old UPS (which I...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Well it certainly wasn't a flickering light that got me concerned. The new engineer has a strong Scottish accent and I'm damned if I understand what he's saying. Something about a new joint that will sort out the problem? We'll see...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Like I said, the DNO seem pretty sure it's a problem outside the house. Hence them digging it up today. The engineer reckons it'll be sorted by tonight. The replacement UPS was a different model, same make. I think it's unlikely that they're both suffering from the same problem. The...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

The first UPS I had was acting exactly the same as the new one. These are APC models and come with a certificate of testing (a receipt that looks like an engineer has signed off on it). APC support haven't been much help, but it doesn't seem to be a calibration problem. Here is a graph of...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

When the sparky was here I only knew the UPS was playing up. No idea that it was voltage related. So didn't really occur to me to ask. I will keep monitoring it and see what the DNO says. Least I feel a bit more confident that it is a voltage problem and not a faulty UPS. Thanks.

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

I explained the situation to them. They said there were no issues with the area but an engineer would be round to check. No solar panels near me. There is a huge construction site not far (the new forth road bridge). Perhaps it's the cause? Wouldn't the sparky have noticed anything when he...

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Already contacted the DNO. They'll be round tomorrow. This is the second UPS I've got in as many months. I assumed the first one was faulty. Seems unlikely that the second one is too. Thanks for the info.

Where to start diagnosing high voltage spikes?

Just looking for some advice. I bought a UPS to protect a computer from occasional outages. It has been going to battery despite there being no power problems. After speaking to the manufacturer it seems the problem is one of high voltage input. Here's a nice graph I made from the readings...

    Opinion re knocking down larder?

Yeah. I've nailed some wood in there to protect the pipes. Getting rid of the larder would be nice, but with the fridge back in there I guess it isn't high on the agenda.

    Opinion re knocking down larder?

Yeah. That's what I've done. Above it is a cupboard not the stairs though. The picture is taken from the cupboard holding up the stairs! Probably not worth the hassle I guess... Thanks for the opinions.

    Opinion re knocking down larder?

I have my fridge inside a small larder in the kitchen. Unfortunately it ruptured a copper pipe today, causing some mayhem. I think the best thing would be to knock down the larder, reroute the pipes and put the fridge into the new alcove. I have no idea how to go about doing any of this. Any...

Safely drilling wall near light swith?

To be honest even if I get it on the wall it's still going to be a pain at the other end (the buzzer). FYI I didn't pay more than 80 for it and the power was going to come from an adapter on the other side of the wall.
