Filling tiny 2mm nail holes in mdf skirting board before painting - polyfilla or caulk OK?

As title says, have some newly fitted skirting board with tiny nail holes from nailgun - about 2mm in diameter, and not very deep. As I already have polyfilla and decorators caulk, can I just use one of these to fill these holes before painting? Of these, polyfilla would be my 1st choice as...

Painting over glossy doorframes with satinwood - best primer to avoid having to sand?

I haven't actually bought any 123 yet as still deciding whether to sand or not... though as said above, am slowly resigning myself to more sanding! I do already have the Johnstone's Aqua Guard and Aqua Guard primer though. Hence, I just wanted to clarify that: If not sanding, 3 coats needed...

Painting over glossy doorframes with satinwood - best primer to avoid having to sand?

Only just seen these last few replies. If you knew how much I've had to sand recently (after full rewire and tons of plastered chases) you'd understand why I wanted to avoid any more of it! Not just the time it takes, but the mess - however if it's just a light sand, and can do it wet, then...

Painting over glossy doorframes with satinwood - best primer to avoid having to sand?

Ah, OK, that's exactly what I wasn't sure of (i.e. if it needed primer and undercoat) - thanks for clarifying (y) So 3 coats, but possibly still preferable to sanding!!

Painting over glossy doorframes with satinwood - best primer to avoid having to sand?

Just to clarify, are you saying this should be fine with no sanding: 1 coat of Zinsser 123 primer over the old gloss, leave to dry overnight, then 1 coat (2 if needed) of Dulux/Johnstone satinwood on top of this?

Painting over glossy doorframes with satinwood - best primer to avoid having to sand?

I know this is all good advice... But from the data sheets, it seems like Zinsser 123 (or BIN) would: 1) stick just fine to the old gloss paint without any preparatory sanding 2) present a surface on which either the Dulux or the Johnstone satinwood would stick to without risk of future...

Painting over glossy doorframes with satinwood - best primer to avoid having to sand?

I want to repaint the doorframes throughout my house with either "Dulux Diamond Satinwood" and "Johnstone's Aqua Guard satin" Looks like they were originally painted with an oil based gloss, as they're a bit yellow... I understand that a water based satin paint will not stick well over a...

Vent just above floor level behind cooker - necessary? Potential absestos?

Am about to have a new cooker installed in a recently purchased house (1960's built) and have pulled out the old cooker to clean in preparation. Found a vent (see pic) just above floor level, which could definitely do with a good clean... It seems to lead to a vented brick in the wall outside...

Can you use a primer for a mist coat on plaster? Or are primers not good for mist coats for some reason?

You know, that's actually some of the best advice I've seen on here! I called the F&B technical dept, then Zinsser, then Johnstone - all were very helpful and answered my questions quickly and definitively. Am just not used to helpful customer services these days (especially after spending...

Can you use a primer for a mist coat on plaster? Or are primers not good for mist coats for some reason?

I did wonder if that might be problem, i.e. generic data sheet for multiple paint types. So many data-sheets/instructions have ambiguities like this - really, would it kill them to clearly state the obvious questions?!? Anyway, from what I can tell from other FAQ's around the web, primer's...

Can you use a primer for a mist coat on plaster? Or are primers not good for mist coats for some reason?

That sections says: "dilute your Farrow & Ball topcoat with 25% water and use this as a mist coat, followed by two coats of your chosen topcoat" - with no mention of the primer at all! The previous section, "Priming and Undercoating Advice" says: "Don't over dilute the Primer & Undercoat or...

Can you use a primer for a mist coat on plaster? Or are primers not good for mist coats for some reason?

Babouche, Estate Emulsion. As far as I'm aware this would be fine for a mist coat. Just not sure if their "white & light colours primer & undercoat for ceilings and walls" can be used as a mist coat on plastered areas.

Can you use a primer for a mist coat on plaster? Or are primers not good for mist coats for some reason?

I did already read it, but it's vague... It's basically unclear whether it's saying to use the overcoat for the mist coat (i.e. under, and in addition to the primer), or whether it's presenting two different scenarios - i.e. you could mist coat plaster with diluted topcoat, or use primer...

Can you use a primer for a mist coat on plaster? Or are primers not good for mist coats for some reason?

I'm planning to paint a room using Farrow & Ball's yellow "Babouche", starting with an undercoat of their "Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat White & Light Tones". The room has several plastered chases after a recent rewire, so I know I need to mist coat these areas as a first step. What I can't...

Fixing "hollow" section in engineered wooden floor which wasn't properly glued down

Yes, holes in nice new floor definitely not ideal! But still preferable to having to rip up floor and redo it. What did you fill your holes with? Presumably you can get wood filler in a variety of colours - or could the holes even be filled with thin dowling?

Fixing "hollow" section in engineered wooden floor which wasn't properly glued down

It's only noticeably flexing when you walk on it - if you look at it from close to floor level, the boards in this area dip just very slightly when someone treads there. Otherwise, they seem level when no weight is on them. The feel is noticeably different too - totally solid elsewhere, but as...

Fixing "hollow" section in engineered wooden floor which wasn't properly glued down

Long story, but to try and make it as brief as possible: had engineered wooden floor fitted recently throughout house, in one room there is a large spot (about 3 x 3 feet) which sounds hollow if knocked on, and floorboards visibly move (sag slightly) when walked on. Boards are tongue and groove...

What glue for fixing PVC trim around bath tub?

Stixall did the trick! Was easy to remove all old glue and sealant, so will now just redo the silicone sealant at the top (that upper trim was also falling off, tho not clear in picture). Totally easy fix, just hadn't used this type of glue before so thanks again for the advice (y)

What glue for fixing PVC trim around bath tub?

So many glues... but what sort is best for sticking back on some bits of PVC trim that have come unstuck from around a bath tub? The type that seems to have been used previously is clear and I think slightly "squidgy" - a silicon glue of some sort?
