Oilman...............................YOU ARE A STAR!!!! :D :D :D :D I never knew that was a button! It was a star shaped button that only moved in flush with it's outer casing. I hit the TEST switch and it kicked into life! :) :) Well, this issue has wasted my pre-planned Sat...

Oil fired boiler refusing to start after changing a radiator

I just ran outside right now (yes that is snow!) of the boiler in question. In the 2nd last pic, the fitting on the RHS is a pressure type (with an internal spring). I heard it hissing after refilling the system, but then stopped. The 'LIMIT' light still said alight...

Hours to warm living room up! Arrggg!

Thanks for both your replies. :) I'm gonna get a nice 1200 x 600 radiator fitted along the top wall, as I can easily lift the suspended floor below and move the pipes. The radiator beside the conservatory will be a issue, well....not much of an issue, but for looks, as the floor is...

Hours to warm living room up! Arrggg!

Thanks a million for willing to help me out!!! I've quickly drawn up the living room on CAD, as it's not just a plain rectangular room. The room is 2400mm high and has Double radiators. The stairs is open to the living room, which goes up with the pitch of the roof of the house...

Hours to warm living room up! Arrggg!

The lack of insulation in the kitchen is what I suspect. Also as last night was very calm in terms of the wind, the difference in both room was remarkable! Draughts is definatly taking away my heat. Certainly throught the extractor fan (blocked up with carrier bags when not in use) and I...

Hours to warm living room up! Arrggg!

We have a stove in the living room, but it has the glass door at the front so is sealed. I even keep the fire all ready to light, so it stops heat escaping up the vents. That fire place was my first suspect!

Hours to warm living room up! Arrggg!

This is our first winter in our new (1890's) house and my lord its cold! My wife stuck the heating on at 12.30pm (living room = 12.5 degC) and it never reached 20 degC till 19.30pm!!!!!! All other rooms were cosy, but the living room took ages. Even worse is the kitchen. It started at 8...

Lofty whole home ventilation system - any good?

What do you mean by positive pressure? Kevin / Paul, whats the age of you homes? Mines was designed to be draughty, so I'm trying to draught proof everything, without damaging the house in the future, by looking at ventilation systems. I also noticed that we don't have vents on the...

Lofty whole home ventilation system - any good?

This is the topic that I'm looking for. I stay in a 1890 Granite croft and it suffers from condensation on both top bedroom windows. They are uPVC that was fitted around 1993. My wife is starting to nag me about getting new windows put in, cause she thinks this is the answer and as soon...

    Is this a TRV?

Christ Kev.you must be old! :P Excellent document! Thanks. By the looks of the schematic, that's what I have. Also noted that this is a dry type actuator and not liquid / wax filled. I'll have a search about to see what the differences are. Thanks all! :)

    Is this a TRV?

What do you mean Kev? My mum's Danfoss TRV's have thermostat written below Danfoss on the end and it's looks totally different (her's is about 25 years old!)

    Is this a TRV?

I'm wanting to get the house all energy friendly and I'm in about the radiators, so thought I'd upgrade to TRV's. All valves are the same throughout my house, however, I noticed that there is a Frost setting on them so wondered if they are a TRV? I don't hear a sort of thermostat noise...

    Cracked roof truss

Thanks a million for all that replies! :) The steading is dated back to the mid 1800's, so the wood has done not bad. According to my records of the steading, the only repair that was done was at the left side of the rafter (in the 1st pic above). The slates were damaged during the...

    Cracked roof truss

Thanks both for your replies. :D Would a steel plate either side of the truss do the job? In the case of bolts, obviously I don't want to drill too big a hole into the wood, incase I weaken the damn thing more! What size of bolt is commonly used in this case? Thanks.

    Cracked roof truss

Hi all. I'm needing a bit of guidance on who to solve this issue! It's the roof of my 19th centry steading and as shown has a nice crack on one of the trusses. My boss told me to get a hold of one of those long structural jacks, drill 4 holes through and bolt on 2 thick plates either side...
