Boost button not working, electric immersion tank

I'm quite sure that standard tollerance is 220-240v......so I'm not a million miles out. Also this isn't the best meter in the world and I'm testing on a plug terminal rather than in the socket. We can assume that the ring main is the right voltage and the meter is reading within 10-20v...

Boost button not working, electric immersion tank

Honestly, I don't want you to think that I am making this up as I go along.....I have the wires exposed and I am testing accross them with needle testers and getting a steady reading for more than 5 seconds.

Did that last night and got a reading of over 200.....posted it back somewhere.

Boost button not working, electric immersion tank

Ok, so I removed the supply side (I don't know the right term) of the block connector and tested the wires bare, and i'm getting a reading of 164.5. Is there a possibility that my multimeter just isn't reading the voltage correctly when I'm testing the block because I can't get a good contact?

I know!! lol I'm testing at the block connector itself, saying that, I didn't check the wire itself while it was bare. I'm going to go and do that now.

Boost button not working, electric immersion tank

I've used a porcelain block to remove the switch for a short test to see if the immersion element heats. After joining the wires I've found that it is still reading 15-20 depending on what part of the block I test on. Any ideas? I'm completely baffled!

Boost button not working, electric immersion tank

right........well that helped a little.........voltage before the switch was normal. After the switch it was dropping to 15v.... I'm going to remove the switch from the circuit tomorrow and run the immersion for an hour or so to establish if the switch is at fault. What do you people think??

Boost button not working, electric immersion tank

Yes I realise that... I tested across the stat and also on the terminals........was fluctuating 15-16.

Actually didn't prove it on a known supply.....but it's in the loft now. It was reading 15??

Bargain buckets are more important than ANYTHING!!! Thank you for your concerns regarding mains work.....you are quite right of course, I should contact a professional, but as another poster pointed out, I'm not going to. I have no intention of frying myself and I have done a lot of work on...

BRB guys, sorry to ignore you all but I've just sat down to my bargan bucket (lol) Don't worry, I'm not gonna shock myself............done that way way way too many times before.

Boost button not working, electric immersion tank

Can you tell me how to check for power at the immersion?? I have a multimeter but I don't have a clue how to check for mains voltage....well, I don't know what to set the meter too. Any advice on that?

Boost button not working, electric immersion tank

Thanks for your reply JPC I'm confident it is not the switch.......and certainly not just because the bulb has gone......as I said, I had no hot water on either the program or boost. How can I test the switch? I have a multimeter but I haven't used it for mains stuff before.........any...
