Beam and block flat roof construction for artificial grass terrace

I'm having a "shed" built in the garden which will have a beam and block roof. The garden is a lot lower then the house so I've got permission to raise to ground floor level. The shed would sit below this level, with artificial grass on top (rest of garden is to be decked to same level). I'm a...

Fitting artificial grass on flat roof, how do I compensate for drainage fall?

Managed to find some "left over" GRP grating which is a lot cheaper (£500). However, my Architect popped by to give me some advice on excavation for shed. He also suggested it wouldn't be noticeable and to just run the adjacent decking to same slope. Suggested it was waste of time/money...

Excavating 1.2mm down, 4.3m from house to accommodate storage shed

For the benefit of anyone else in a similar position, my architect popped by this morning and confirmed it should be fine given its well outside the 45 deg line. Also he recalled from previous work we'd probably hit hardcore and the house foundations are likely deeper then the excavation since...

Excavating 1.2mm down, 4.3m from house to accommodate storage shed

I thought perhaps a sketch might help as my description is a little confusing having read it back. The area with artificial grass is where the shed will be. The planters behind that are the rear boundary. The large area of decking is the 4.3m between the house and the shed.

Excavating 1.2mm down, 4.3m from house to accommodate storage shed

I have a small garden (rest was sold off before I bought the property) which is 8m x 8m. It is also several feet below the ground floor of the property (there's a 1m high basement underneath the house), with a slope falling away to the rear of the garden. I got planning to raise the entire...

Fitting artificial grass on flat roof, how do I compensate for drainage fall?

Had some advice from one of the Grass suppliers. Suggested as per Franks advice that it won't be noticeable and to run the decking to the same slope. Or if I really want it flat use a GRP grating over the block and beam roof, but I'm looking at ~£1400 (incl adjustable feet) for the ~24 sqm :/...

Fitting artificial grass on flat roof, how do I compensate for drainage fall?

Laying the decking at the same slope is the other option, thanks for the suggestion. If I can't find another solution, I'll have to go this route as atleast it will mask the slope from the eye. I can make the roof at any pitch (within reason for a flat block and beam roof). Screed wouldn't work...

Fitting artificial grass on flat roof, how do I compensate for drainage fall?

Thanks, I have been looking up recommended falls for roofs. The minimum recommended is 1:80 and advice is to design in 1:60 for flat roofs (1:40 for other roofs) to compensate for build tolerances and sagging (although shouldn't be any sagging in a block and beam roof). The grass and underlay...

Fitting artificial grass on flat roof, how do I compensate for drainage fall?

I'm working through the issues for a garden project, where the garden is several feet below the ground floor of the house. The design involves decking/planters/walls around the boundary. With artificial grass in the centre. Decking and grass at the same level. The artificial grass will be...

What type of concrete blocks to buy?

Unfortunately I doubt Turnbull and Interfuse will deliver to West London :/ I'll give Jewson a try on Monday. Can anyone recommend anywhere else near West London (Uxbridge) for Dense blocks (need about 500 initially)? So far its looking like ~£1.00 a block if I can get Wickes trade discount...

Advice on building roof for artificial grass

Well i'm getting more and more confused which way to go. Had one of the contractors I'm considering come in for an initial look before quoting. Advice was as follows: Option 1) Proceed with "conventional" decking/artificial grass. Use steel beams and wooden joists for frame. This will provide...

Advice on building roof for artificial grass

I assume you mean building regs will apply for the terrace style roof if I go that route rather then sub structure as I'd originally planned? Perhaps its simpler to stick to the sub structure. And just figure out how to accommodate the artificial grass in the decking above (ideally want grass...

Advice on building roof for artificial grass

You are pretty much echoing my own concerns which is why I posted here. I don't plan on doing a DIY job, I will be using a contractor. I do know builders who've done work for me and family before. But I don't think any have done what is essentially a roof terrace, so pretty sure I'll be using...

Advice on building roof for artificial grass

Thanks. A relative has told me the same. So worst case I plan to make a start and buy myself some more time. But ideally I'd just like to get it done. Otherwise I'll have a persistent headache from the Mrs while the garden is left half ripped up :/

Advice on building roof for artificial grass

I've got a ~70/sqm town garden which is 6 ft below the first floor of my house. Having got planning permission to raise and deck the garden with some storage underneath part of it, I've been mulling over the options for a couple of years. Now with the planning nearing its 3 year expiry I have to...

    Dry Storage under Decking?

Well I got a response back for DryJoist. Equates to approx $130 sq meter, no UK supplier so theres going to be shipping and possibly DUTY/VAT on top of that. I'm going to get a final cost and consider possibly using it for a smaller portion of the deck.

    Dry Storage under Decking?

That would be a possibility, but i'd need to be sure its very secure. The drop underneath would be 6ft. I've found some information on US forums (after being led to them by rsgaz's suggestion of dry joist), where "dry deck systems" as they call them are more popular. There seem to be a couple...

    Dry Storage under Decking?

I have emailed them to ask for pricing. Did some googling and found an American forum where someone stated $12-16$ sq ft, may be a bit too expensive to do whole deck in that case. But would be ok for just the sheltered storage area. I'll update the thread when I get pricing back from them.

    Dry Storage under Decking?

Wow, that looks ideal. If I understand it correctly thats the joist and roof/guttering all in one profile. Now to find someone that stocks it in the uk and hope the prices aren't eye watering. If its economical I could use it for the whole deck possibly and chuck all the water in a soak away...
