The newel-post is fixed to the bottom of the stringer with a mortise and tenon joint or at least should be .So you would need to buy a appropiate staircase

Based on all the imformation you have given ,it mght be. If the staircase has just one wall on the side of it,opposed to having a wall either side and it is a standard size staircase ,then it is relativley easy. :)

Beleive me, You can still do a figure of eight holding the chisel flat to the oil stone, the idea behind it is ,it helps to keep the stone flat :)
