choice of two old washing machines - Hoover and Philco

I think I would go for the Philco, although they are not a particularly common make these days. Philco machines were mostly badged Bendix years ago and were very reliable. I think the Hoover you mention is one of the models made after Hoover was taken over by Candy. These are not as good as...

    bosch washing machine WFF2001 fault

Another possibility is a burnt out solenoid on the cold water electric inlet valve. Most machines have a cold valve with 2 or more outlets with individual solenoids for each outlet. If the solenoid for conditioner rinse burns out the machine sticks at that point in the programme.

Hoover Performa 1100 Washer Dryer not drying

It could be a blockage in the condenser. This is a moulded vertical plastic vessel mounted on the back of the drum. They sometimes get full of wet fluff.

    bosch washing machine WFF2001 fault

Have you checked the filter? On most Bosch machines you can see the pump impellor when the filter cap is removed. You can check if it's jammed etc. There is usually a thin hose with a cap on the end for draining the water out before you loosen the filter cap.

Hotpoint VTD00G 6Kg Rev Vent Tumble dryer packed in

Personally I don't like this idea of stretch belts and no tensioner jockey wheels. Hotpoint will tell you they did it for quieter operation but in truth it was to shave a few pennies off the manufacturing cost. In reality they are probably spending more than they saved in extra warranty work...

Hotpoint VTD00G 6Kg Rev Vent Tumble dryer packed in

I would rather do tumble dryers than dishwashers any day

Different types of DNO domestic main fuses / switches

Surely if this switch is before the meter it should be left to the electricity supplier to remove it. In the meantime it is a handy means of isolating the supply if you are fitting a new CU.

Some types are screwed into the plaster like self tapping screws so can be similarly unscrewed.

    Washing Machine and Dryer Help

Bosch are good. I used to always recommend Zanussi but I hear that their cheaper models now have a sealed drum that can't be dismantled for drum bearing replacement.

Hotpoint VTD00G 6Kg Rev Vent Tumble dryer packed in

Yes, broken belt is one of the most common faults on all makes of tumble driers, including 10+ year old Hotpoints

    T/Bendix W/machine wont agitate

If you try putting it back on spin now you have had the filter bung out you will eliminate the possibility that there is too much water for it to spin. I don't think this is the case anyway as it would still agitate. You do usually get some water, perhaps half a pint, come out when you open the...

Different types of DNO domestic main fuses / switches

Very old fuse boxes tended not to have a built in isolating switch but had a separate one such as you describe. when replacing such a fusebox with a new CU you would normally do away with the old switch as well.

    T/Bendix W/machine wont agitate

No, belts generally only slip if the drum is severely overloaded, in which case the motor pulley quickly burns through the belt. I think it's a motor fault.

What make is it & how old?

I would guess that model was made about 6 years ago.

    T/Bendix W/machine wont agitate

You say it spins under no load conditions. Does that mean it won't spin when there is wet washing in it? If this is the case it is almost certainly a faulty motor. If you know somewhere that sells reconditioned machines you may be able to get a secondhand motor.

    Zanussi fjs1225W w/m Keeps stopping

It could be a loose edge connector on the circuit boards. With the machine unplugged you could try going round these one at a time unplugging them and refitting as they sometimes work loose through vibration.

Ceiling rose with unusual wiring (well to me!)

Yes, the taped up wires go in the central Loop In section (but only if they are currently all connected together, you don't say). The blacks and blue go in the N section, the brown and single red in the L section and all earths to the earth terminal.

    Project "House"

£3K is not a lot to do the amount of work you describe. Having said that I have probably spent less than that on my place. I changed from solid fuel back boiler to gas combi, fitted new screwfix bathroom suite with steel bath, electric shower with glass screen, tiled approx. half of bathroom...

    door stuck washing machine

Some hotpoints have a device called a pecker fixed to the motor. This has a cable similar to a bicycle brake cable connected to the door lock mechanism. This pecker may have fell off the motor or gone out of adjustment. It has a knife edge that presses into the belt or the motor shaft then you...
