    TRV valves should be put on the flow unless they are bi directional so if you are not certain what type of valve it is put it on the flow to be safe. The flow pipe is the one wich heats up first when the radiator is turned on and this pipe will always be hotter than the return.

    My house is about 35 years old and i need to replace my dodgy stop tap. The pipe coming into the property is black polyethylene How can tell if its MDPE or LDPE and will it be metric or imperial. Also what adapters will i need to put a 22mm stop tap on.

    You will get a donut fitting in with a coupling kit screwfix kat part number 17405 £1.79 they also sell them at B&Q.

    The seal you are talking about is called a donut fitting and is always worth replacing when you change the syphon even if it looks o.k. They cost about £1. As for your cylinder immersion heater stat its simple just remove the wire and the stat will just pull out on a long rod no need to drain...
