sounds like the short red is used as a live feed to the other side of the 2 gang. are there 3 cables in the landing switch?

Have you thought about installing a PIR to switch on your lights ? Say, in the ceiling directly as you walk in the door? ( Screwfix have an external pir ( IP66 rated) at 18 quid) Just a thought.
