eon also want to change our electricity meter (don't think it's particularly old, it is digital), would this be better done before or after or makes no difference?

    New consumer unit?

Cheers for the offer, we're in the process of getting additional quotes so we'll see what others say. It may be that we'd choose to replace the whole board anyway, if we're having other electrical work done it might work out more economical than having it done at a separate time. Just trying...

Load Bearing Wall removal - Croydon Council

We didn't require any calculations. I put building notice in, building inspector came round, said 8 x 4 will be plenty, no calcs needed. I know some councils publish a list of acceptable spans/beam sizes

    Boarding a universal beam

In which case any advice on the best way to board out the beam bearing in mind we don't want to add any width (beyond the width of the fireboard) so a timber frame is out. All the info I can find talks about sticking the bottom piece on.

    New consumer unit?

He didn't expand on the reasoning other than 'it was too old' The boiler was replaced before we bought so didn't have any dealings with that. Gas and water supply were earthed at the same time. From what I can gather, all circuits are currently protected by 1 RCD

    New consumer unit?

Had an electrician round this morning to quote for some new sockets and lighting circuit in our new kitchen. He said that we need a new consumer unit. It's an oldish MEM unit but with RCD protection and one that a new boiler was wired in to in 2010. Have regulations changed in the past...

Plastering - joint between brick and drywall

There'd be joints in the plasterboard even if we boarded right across, are these joints a lot less likely to crack versus the brick/plasterwork joint? The first method suggested would mean 3 joints (recesses can be filled by single plasterboard), second would mean a lot more as wall in total...

Plastering - joint between brick and drywall

So board the recesses out so boards are flush with brick, tape joints and cover the whole lot?

Plastering - joint between brick and drywall

When I say brick I mean bare brick, no old plaster remaining

Plastering - joint between brick and drywall

Currently got a wall with a chimney breast and recesses either side. We're constructing stud wall to block up the recesses so that the wall will be flush with the front of the chimney breast. Chimney breast is not very deep ~20cm and what we gain by having a straight wall with no recesses (it's...
