Building inspection - roof structure not as per plan

Hi all, Just had my building inspector round this morning to check my extension against the completion certificate. He found a couple of minor issues, but potentially the most major one is that my joiner has built the roof with 225 timber at 600 centers instead of 250 timber at 400 centers...

Vent stack needed for toilet only?

The loo is about four or five feet away from the main drain that runs through my back garden, (runs along the back of this row of terraced houses) so there should be no restriction whatsoever between the loo and the main drain (apart from this 5ft of 110mm pipe) (the loo is against the back wall...

Vent stack needed for toilet only?

I am installing a new downstairs WC and am wondering if I need a vent stack, or stink pipe, if ALL that I have on the drain is the toilet. The sink is drained separately as it would have been awkward to tie it into the toilet waste. There is a bedroom above the WC, so no additional...

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

I'm sure there are other, neater solutions which I could have used T&E for, but when the plans say it has to be surface mounted, and the building control guys (when queried by telephone) sinsisted on NO wiring being inside ANY walls of the garage, including the wall between the garasge and the...

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

I think its because flush sockets create paths for smoke and maybe flame to penetrate into wall cavities and maybe garages are more susceptible to fire or fumes than living spaces.

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

Thanks Riveralt. I agree that the consumer unit being in the garage is probebly the best solution. It is already there, though it's MCB's on an RCD, rather than MCBO's I was trying to keep the garage and attached utility area on a single ring as that is what was suggested (or perhaps more...

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

I had a look at http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Book/4.5.3.htm with interest. Looks like this has more to do with mechanical "pullability" than heat generation (assuming we are staying below the 45% fill capacity). Anyway... 2.5mm stranded has a factor of 43. 20mm conduit has a factor of...

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

What makes you think I'm trying to do something "inferior" to a professional installation? I'm not. Of course this is subject to the same constraints, anything else would be insanity. If I was trying to do a substandard job, why would I have asked the question in the original post? For that...

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

Remember that this installation has to be signed off by a trained professional such as yourselves, so it doesn't benefit me in the slightest to do anything which does not meet regulations, because it will just need to be redone. That's why I ask questions here. I'm happy to take any (helpful)...

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

Okay, so does that mean that a t&e 2.5mm cable, converted to three singles needs 180 times its own cross sectional area as air within the conduit? 2.5 x 180 is 450, plus the 3 x 2.5, means that the total cross sectional area for the ID of the conduit for only these three singles, should be...

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

Dear readers. Please see above a couple of beautiful examples of different ways to respond to a simple, well intended question. One of them is helpful, acknowledges that I'm not a professional, and also that most DIYers (to whom this site is directed) wouldn't know what that was, and...

What is the total length of the conduit? (Probably about 20 metres) Does it incorporate bends and long straight runs. (yes, and tee's) If so how many bends are there? (about a dozen by the time I include the drops to the sockets and cables to the four ceiling lights) Have you calculated the...

wiring garage in 20mm conduit - choosing singles?

Yes, that's what I was going to do, but I've just ordered the singles from Screwfix instead. Looks like the blue and green/yellow were in the clearance section at £15 a roll, but had to pay full price £30 for the brown. Still cheaper than £42 +VAT per roll from local City Electrical...
