    Extractor fan puzzle.

A timer fan requires 3 feeds, a live, switched live and a neutral. See the sticky for info.

Removing a socket and moving another - have I sinned?

Yes, see here about kitchens http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/england/professionals/en/4000000001253.html The telephone socket was probably sited between the supply and another socket elsewhere - or something similar.

But how many times have we seen a new CU installed on the back of an outdated system like this...

Adding a fused spur to the lighting circuit

You will generally find that frowned upon as a practise. Yes it is harder to get access to the ring main, often, but the easy way out is not necessarily the one to commend itself. You'll find many regulars here with signature blocks like "Good work isn't cheap and cheap work isn't good" or "If...

Improving existing overhead supply to garage

That's a TN-C-S supply. You could do as you propose. Hi-tuf is fine for an overhead catenary as yes, SWA does take some practise to work with and your post indicates you have no idea about how to do so (that external JB is so not useable as is for SWA). Overhead cables do not, in...

    socket tripping shower

Whatever the location or arrangement, if a power radial is tripping the rccb then there is a fault on that radial that needs to be found and fixed. You could start by shortening the radial at each of the sockets, one by one, by disconnecting the outgoing cable from either end first, to isolate...

    Lighting question

No, it doesn't matter to which rose you connect your supply cable. Strip the outer cable insulation back so that it does not protrude through the ceiling and then connect your new wires into the rose. Yes it can be a tight fit but is normally do-able without too much trouble. Take that...

    bathroom light switch

That looks like the old pre green/yellow plain green sheathing to me. In which case, Breezers 2:42am post applies. (2:42am :o - is he a vampire or something?) The green/yellows are multicore earth wires - Supplementary bonds from other equipment in the bathroom probably. Do you have a...

    connection unit

Are you saying that, when you remove the front plate of the socket, there is only one cable feeding that socket? If so, is the power to this socket isolated by a fuse/cb that controls a ring main or has it got its own fuse/cb? If so, what rating is the fuse/cb?

    bathroom light switch

I wish to defend Jack. Whilst not the best, he has carried out some pretty decent work. His brother Jerry though ........................

Can I do this - 13A socket in loft, by RCD on Ringmain.

I have run cables inside boxes alongside soil pipes before. You have to consider how the cable will be supported (if it's a long run and left hanging it can cause stretching of the cable at the top and thinning of the wire). With those considerations, it's a good point of access.

    Defective wall switch

Buy or borrow a cheap multimeter, unscrew the front plate and, with the power switched back on :) check to see if there is a live cable to the back of the switch. As jj alludes, it is not uncommon to have an old switch physically left in position after it has been removed, electrically, from...

Electrics in House are not right - Please help

Mad, but not uncommon!! Option 1 would work. Protect the whole spur with a 13A FCU. From the JB replace the 1.5mm cable with a 2.5 to an FCU with a 3A fuse in it and connect the light on its 1.5 cable into it. I don't like mixing cable types on a cct, but it would be safe. It would be...

    Bathroom extractor fused fan

What make and model fan do you have as, if it is a timer overrun fan, then it cannot be installed properly via a 2 pole switch? The fan needs a switched live, from the light switch - this signals it to turn on when the light goes on - that's shown as the yellow sleeved red on Breezers diagram...

Can I do this - 13A socket in loft, by RCD on Ringmain.

Why not run the cable up alongside the soil pipe then? Use T+E and save money (binning the old wire).

Odd house wiring and CU replacement

To properly answer this one would need a good look at the whole system. It is not unusual in older installations to have this arrangement (and yours could be getting on for 40 years old!). The sockets cct could well be a radial and not a ring, this would explain the 20Amp fuse and the single...

    Bathroom extractor fused fan

This diagram from the sticky shows what you should do. Did you add the 2 pole switch? You need a 3 pole as per the above. Bathroom work is part p reportable so you should have informed building control.

Can I do this - 13A socket in loft, by RCD on Ringmain.

Ans 1: Yes you can - and I am glad you are made of stern enough stuff to have ignored the lighting radial for your power supply! Ans 2: As to what sort of cable, if it is completely out of arms reach on a 2 storey house I would directly clip hi-tuf like this...

    Flourescent Light Help

I'm afraid I don't really think your post makes any sense. Exactly what do you mean by Are you trying to connect this light by intercepting an existing lighting radial or are you proposing to connect this light into an appropriate cb in your consumer unit? Either way, I can't really see...

Earth Bonding on New Consumer Unit

Not quite. The new consumer unit will need an earth connection to it. The water pipe used to be allowed to be used for this purpose, but not anymore. Both the water and the gas pipes will need to be connected to the earth either within 600mm of your side of the meter or where the pipe enters...
