    Composite Decking

I had some samples through from Dino Decking, seemed good quality (I think £20 per 4m length) but read horror stories about scratches etc so now back to my original plan of either sandstone or porcelain paving (area of approx 65m2). Dino were quoting 4-6 weeks delivery a week or so ago (free...

    Help with aggregate amounts please

Thanks Notch Life saver.... had similar quantities suggested elsewhere too so that’s what I’ll be ordering Last question, when I pour my 4” deep concrete base onto my compacted type 1, can I pour it in one go, or do 2 pours at approx 2” deep each time and let it dry first

    Help with aggregate amounts please

I’m planning on laying a concrete base for 2 sheds in the garden, a total area of 17m2. Was planning a depth of 100mm of type 1 MOT, then 100mm of concrete. Can anyone help with how much type 1, ballast and how many 25kg bags of cement I’ll need? I’ve tried 3 online calculators and getting...

Laying decking over an old patio

Thanks guys, one part of the decking that will sit directly onto the old patio is 25m2. Was thinking of using composite joists on here, as I could lay them straight down on the pavers (the joists are 30mm x 50mm dimension, id use the 30mm height as very restricted) How do you join 2 x joists...

Laying decking over an old patio

Thanks guys Munroist good idea with the car tyres. Also, you say I could possibly get away with a 3x2” frame on its side, do you mean the 3” sides in contact with the old pavers and the underside of the deck boards? Am thinking of lifting the old pavers to get an extra 30-35mm allowance, but...

Laying decking over an old patio

We're now planning to lay decking over an old patio, but don't have much height allowance. The old patio is solid pavers, on an old solid base that will be a pain to remove (me and my partner want to do it all ourselves). what options do i have please on laying decking over slabs?

    Boarding over fence panels

Right, had a brainwave (I think) while sat in the garden. Instead of boarding over 2 x fence panels at a time, how would this look: remove current panels and sell them (they are decorative fence panels) paint concrete posts black cut treated 6" x 2" timber to fit between the posts Drop 11 x...

    Laying large porcelain pavers

Lay only!! And that's with them expecting me to have the full mortar bed already laid for them, so basically just for them to come round and lay the Ditra mat, adhesive and pavers!

    Laying large porcelain pavers

Thanks again lonner - the tiles i saw locally were stunning. I was quoted £4,500 to lay 60 sqm of them, but to lay only, no prep (building up some steps etc). That was to lay them directly onto a solid cement base as a tile. Included adhesive and 60m2 of Ditra mat underlay. Not too sure if...

    Laying large porcelain pavers

Thanks again lonner, they are stunning Are porcelain a pig to lay do you know? Ive watched videos on YouTube (not to self teach, just to see the process) and one highly rated video shows a compacted bed of sand and then a fairly dry sand/cement mix to stick them down Yet others, including the...

    Boarding over fence panels

Thanks again dal5band Found some treated boards from buildbase 19mm x 150mm x 4.2m so will cover 2 panels in one run. I’m after the red cedar colour treatment to stain them - any recommendation on the best brand to get?

    Laying large porcelain pavers

Thanks lonner Is there a better quality of porcelain paver? Guy at the showroom said to avoid Chinese and Eastern European porcelain and go for (I think, Spanish or Italian?) Ever heard that before? Or is all porcelain much the same? Just want to get the best we can for the money

Ahhhh ok thanks dal5band Can I paint over a pressure treated board? Or would it be better (and last longer) to use a coloured stain?

    Laying large porcelain pavers

we’re planning on having our old patio replaced and have decided on large porcelain pavers that are 120 x 60cm. Our old paving looks to be on a solid base (we’ve lifted several and it’s a solid concrete base by the looks of it) We assumed the new paving would be laid on a compacted sand then...

Buying jumbo bags vs loose & getting rid of waste

I've got quite a bit of work planned over the summer, and will need a lot of type 1 MOT sub base, and sand etc Is there a rough weight/amount you need to make it more viable to buy loose and have it tipped, than the jumbo bags from Wickes etc? Will be our first time buying aggregate so any...

    Pondless water features

Thanks Conny, good idea too if they aren't drilled, hadnt thought of that just arranging them to hide the pipework. Will take a look Our local garden centres were open but got closed down I think, yet Wickes has been open all the way through (and been a godsend)

    Boarding over fence panels

Thanks John I was hoping for a smoother finish, something i can paint straight away. If I'm painting it with Cuprinol fence paint, will the wood need to be treated or tanalised, even if im giving it a couple of coats of waterproof paint?
