    Horrible thought

Yes, but it sounds like it's protected only by the service fuse. Apart from the annoyance when it blows it, as just happened, the service fuse may be rated way above the cable, which is a very Bad Thing indeed! Remember that a fuse (or CU/MCBs) only protects what is beyond it - a fault...

    Earthing a metal-plate phone socket

I see a Darwin Award in the making! :-) Did you know that a small but non-zero number of people die each year from testing PP3 (9V) batteries on their tongue? You only have to connect the other one (assuming there is the opportunity to do so, and that he didn't cut back the other cores...

    Bathroom "Vanity Unit"

Maria, Mini-trunking is white (usually) plastic and looks like this: It's fixed to the surface of the wall when you can't (or don't want to) run the cable below the surface. It works, but it doesn't look very good! You're lucky, in that you have the opportunity to bury the cable. The...

    Earths (with picture)

Simon, The photo doesn't seem to tie up with your description - what I see is two twin&earth cables (looks like 2.5mm, but it's not easy to tell from a photo) which were connected together. Accordingly, there are two earth conductors, which are connected in the JB. Where are the other four...

    Earthing a metal-plate phone socket

Or maybe in case a passing mains cable behind it makes contact with the faceplate? (You never know!) Or since it's screwed to a backbox, that it could be an extraneous earth? They are supposed to have the tag on the end of the catch broken off, so you can't disconnect them without using a...

    Earthing in 2 flats

I don't understand what you mean here - how are they "in the way"? Do you mean there is no way physically to run the cable? Not sure what you mean by "cable around the sheath" - there should be an earthing clamp around the sheath, and the cable should be connected to that. The REC's...

    Earthing in 2 flats

I seem to be missing something here (not unusual! :-) Why wasn't the new supply TNS, since the downstairs flat is already that? Surely the facility for a TNS supply must be there already, so why didn't they go that way? Further, isn't it possible to ask for TNS (and maybe pay extra) when...

Advice Needed - Light Switch Wiring

[/url] Dave, I know you're connecting it to a light, but if you ever do the same with a socket just make sure anything you plug into it is going to be safe to switch on at any random time. An electric fire face-down on a sofa, for example, would be a Bad Thing! :) Cheers, Howard

    Socket Height

Do you mean height-above-surface, or straight-line distance? Cheers, Howard

    Socket Height

And as for the 1200mm-from-a-sink thing, impractical in my old (1937) kitchen too! One side of the sink is 1000mm from one wall, the other 700mm from that one (small kitchen, big sink). The only places that are more than 1200mm from the sink are on the opposite wall or behind the door...

    Power Generators?

Oh, I think we all knew that really :) It quotes it at "35W RMS" - that's the output power, you need to look for the input power (W) or amperage (A), on a plate on the thing itself. That will tell you what size you need in any generator or invertor. The problem with a generator is the...

    Emmersion heater

No room - it already fits neatly between the wall and the door of the airing cupboard (because I built it round the tank, in an alcove in the bedroom - any bigger and there wouldn't be room for the bed!). Cheers, Howard

Best way to get light in garage with no electricty?

I like this - a self-fulfilling fuse. It's designed to prevent a short circuit, which it provides itself! :) I wonder if the OP can get onto the roof of the garage, and install solar panels? That way his battery would be charged (somewhat) for nothing and with no hassle. Maplin used to...

    Lighting circuit geometry

That's true, but the answer is in the maths - have a look at the rating (in Amps) of a 1mm^2 T&E cable - you'll find it's well over the rating of the fuse/MCB that you have protecting it. And you may well have 1.5mm^2 cable, so you have even a bigger margin! Cheers, Howard

    Power Generators?

Oh Good Grief, BAS! Just as a tiny bit of revenge: B&Q Warehouse were selling a little petrol generator (about 750W I think) for £70-odd a little while ago - worth checking if they still do... Cheers, Howard

    Emmersion heater

Hey guys, it really isn't a problem! For the rare times I have to use the manual override, it's not worth trying to find another solution, and some of those times it would have to predict the future, so wouldn't work anyway! Cheers, Howard

    Emmersion heater

A number of reasons: 1. I want to be able to switch it on /ad-hoc/ for situations when I need more hot water than usual during the day 2. The cable route from CU to airing cupboard is very awkward and I really don't want to have to run another cable 3. Having logged the water temperature in...
