    Ceiling rose...plz help!!

Yes, as Stem says, you need a live feed to the switched live of the fan and 1 to the over run timer, so you need both the red and the yellow (with a red sleeve!) into the loop.

    New Cable needed??

Yes, unless there is a large disparity in the rating of the old and new, which I would doubt from what you say, or the wiring needs replacing, anyway, purely due to its age.

    Ceiling rose...plz help!!

The 4 core cable is normally used between the switches of a 2 way switched lighting system, but, here, it appears that it may have been used to power the fan. The red and the yellow, wihich needs a red sleeve as it is being used as a live, would connect into the loop at the ceiling rose, the...

How many sockets off one ring main

The limit is more one of physical space and cable running rather than technically of the socket numbers. In theory it is unlimited as the 2 "legs" of the ring will share the load and the MCB will pop long before the cable has reached its operating limit. There is a limit that it must not...

    New Cable needed??

I am assuming you have a 45A Cooker control unit with an integral socket and a connection unit behind the cooker into which the cooker is hard wired. The answer to your q re the cable depends upon what you have, cable wise, and what you are intending to install. I would hope you have a cable...

    Zone 2 shaving light

The requirement for gear in Zone 2 is IPx4. You can only put in fixed equipment that can't reasonably be located elsewhere and you can only install shaver supplies to BS EN 60742 Ch2 Sec 1 provided that they are placed where direct spray from the shower is unlikely. I did a search for the...

Only, possibly, that the Installation certificates are not just for domestic work. They're to cerify the installation is iaw the 16th Edition, so can be used to cater for houses, stairwells in flats, shops below flats and other small commercial units. (By me, anyway  ) Exactly which...

    economy 7

I am no expert on this. However, I did a study, taking daily readings, on a couple of houses I had to try to determine this very issue. On the tariffs then applying, I found it saved money to go E7 because the fridges and freezers ran 24/7 and I used a timer on the washing machine, dishwasher...

Earth bonding - is this right?

No, it is not job creation. A good path to earth is essential for your safety in the house, generally, but especially in the bathroom. As he is going to replace the shower cable he will want to ensure that the job he leaves is as safe as he can get it. If there is no Main Earth Bond to the...

My Mains fusebox keeps tripping at between 3am and 6am every

I presume your main switch is an RCD? Do you have anything on a timer at all? Are you in a block of flats? Do you have any heavy industry locally?

Meter remote from CU in a flat

Practically -tho Adam is spot on - the DP isolator is there to isolate the CU to allow work to be done without having to remove the board fuse or switch live tails around. You don't need an isolator as you describe, but it is useful to have one on the few occassions it is used. I do disagree...

    Test equipment

Don't know about that one, but I replaced the set with a Kewtech KT61 (they're all manufactured by Kyoritsu) a short while ago - apart from not having a test button on a probe (which is a really desirable feature) it's been terrific for my domestic/light commercial work. Can't praise it enough.

    Recommended Lighting Levels

Does anyone out there have a guide, or a link to one, that gives average required lighting levels for different establishments? (I've got a job rewiring a self contained hairdressing salon and am trying to advise (scientifically) on a new, energy efficient, lighting fit). Thanx guys

I think the question answers itself. Both the sections dealing with prevention of mutual detrimental influences refer to just that. Those referring to protection from shock refer to just that - or am I missing something? :?

    wiring up downlighters

You could use JB's but the rules say they must be accessible to allow for later inspection, so you can't seal them up in the ceiling. If you just parallel the lights, you'll need less cable, probably, and will save on the JB's. Don't forget to Equi bond the lighting cct.
