    Floor joists

Thermalite blocks are not load bearing and will likely crumble. Lay a length of timber along the length of the thermalite block wall before putting the floor joists on this will help spread the load and stop the joists from damaging the blocks.

    Loft conversion........sort of

As andy says if you were doing a proper conversion you would normally install steel supports. That would be required by building regulations along with calculations showing that the weight has been accounted for. You would also need to install a stair case, a fire door on all 1s't floor rooms...

    Loft conversion........sort of

Yes that is correct the wight of the new floor is on 4 points 2 on either end wall. The wall is a structural wall and is solid so it can take the wight where as the existing joists will just flex and the celling crack. Most houses have a central wall that is a supporting wall that divides the...

    Loft conversion........sort of

Yes the joists are to thin for any serious use, a very common issue as they were only ever intended to hold the celing up. What I have done is create a new floor in our house using 2"x6" (47x150mm) timber. Although still not officially good enough for a room, it is perfectly adequate for my...

    No Felt under Tiles

I wouldn't say a waste of money as using insulation has two advantages. First most people who board out their loft for storage have inadequate insulation as they often have 100mm of fiberglass. So insulating the rafters helps improve the loft insulation. Second the loft space temperature...

    No Felt under Tiles

Your welcome, It took me a while to find this solution myself, as like you the spray foam idea didn't appeal, so pleased to share. One thing probably worth adding is that you will still want air to come into the loft space from the eaves. In my case the ventilation will be in the trickle...

    No Felt under Tiles

I haven't quite finished the project yet as it is part of a larger project that includes installing solar collectors, velux windows in the roof, installing a new floor and putting boiler in the loft space. But it is a very simple job to do. Cellotex / Kingspan comes in 2.4x1.2m boards and it is...

    No Felt under Tiles

I have done our loft using celotex/kingspan rigid boards. Our rafters are 3"(75mm) I have nailed some 15mmx15mm battons down the sides of the rafters against the tiled edge to form an Air Gap. Then cut strips of 60mm celotex and put foil tape over the joins. The reason I left 15mm is that...

    Is Screwfix a disaster?

Erm, get what you pay for. So if you mean by paying more you get the same product and rubbish service for your extra money then I agree.

Ground floor joist problem - new support?

Looks like there was no damp course so you are probably going to have to lay a damp proof strip and then put a new support timber down.

    Is Screwfix a disaster?

I am curious why anyone uses screwfix anymore ? It used to be the case that you could rely on speedy delivery and everthing would be really cheap. But not any more, you can guarantee that toolstation are miles cheaper and even B&Q are cheaper in a lot of cases despite being the same...

    Necessity of foam underlay

I would imagine if you put the new on top of the old you may not get it to sit level unless the new pieces are thinner than the old. So you will have to at least scrape some of the old bitumen off first to leave clearance for the new.

    Necessity of foam underlay

Parquet floor is traditionally attached to the concrete underneath with bitumen the foam stuff you have is for laminate flooring.

neverending project - insulation and condensation

Easy way is to use Celotex/Kingspan rigid board insulation. Easily cuts into strips to fit between the joists and then use foil tape to keep it in place and seal the edges.

    Loft Boarding issue

Unless the spots are sealed fire rated spots they will need to dissipate heat. As a result you will need to make sure the insulation is cleared away and that they are not covered over by your boards. You can get fire hoods screwfix 70589.

    Radiators in timber boxing?

Yes, sounds about right. A true radiator would something like an old electric heater that has a reflector in it.

    Radiators in timber boxing?

Well actually a radiator is in fact incorrectly named as it doesn't so much radiate heat but relies on convection.

    Moving external telephone cable

No you are not allowed to anything with the wire that belongs to BT. BT are responsible for the wiring from the street to the master socket. If you interfere with it and cause a fault you risk being charged a hefty bill for putting it right.

    Installing Underfloor Heating

Electric underfloor heating is pretty inefficient compared to a wt system that is connected to the central heating boiler.
