Very pricey,you can pick up a 4 burner hob for under £100 these days or a 5 burner for slightly more.Shop around.

I`ve had this a few times on Baxi BBUs,it`s usually the burner has cracked and is back lighting through this and and burning inside the burner.Occasionally,very occasionally it`s the endcap on the burner has loosened and again it`s backlighting through this.

Also check the burner ports aren`t choked.

Probably just a partially choked pilot,these can hold if small when the flame is on,but as soon as it`s turned off almost impossible to relight. As suggested get it serviced and checked out.

In general you are correct,but be aware the more radiators you have on the more water you are heating.Therefore the boiler will stay on for longer,using more gas.

Try putting some compost round the bottom of it and watering it :P
