Extra sockets and light switch and outside light

The garage may be on the same circuit as the rest of downstairs, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that the garage socket is a spur.

Could be a potential killer. Get it sorted as soon as possible. :!:

    junction boxes & ring main

Well I'm pretty sure that's not in my reg's book, and I've got a pretty good grasp of it. I think it's a case of Chinese whispers, especially as it looks as if that info came from a builder. The experience I had was with the NICEIC rep who said JB's were not acceptable for use when connecting...

    Split load CUs - why?

I think you have to assess every socket individually according to conditions. I would not be happy that a 'blanket' email/memo would prevent every person in every circumstance using a socket by a door to supply equipment outside. I think you have to look at it like this: 'Is it possible that...

Where did you hear that idea breezer? I too have been told that, just wondered if it was the same source :?:

    kitchen socket heights

The 14th Edition wiring reg's used to say 150mm from the surface, but that's no longer the case. I would say use your tiles as the best guide; you want to minimise the awkwardness (spelling? :? ) of cutting your tiles around the boxes in the wall. Generally 150mm (strangely enough  ) from...

LV Downlight cover/not cover with loft Insulation

If you're feeling flush you could buy covers but as breezer said, just leave some clearance around the fitting. It should say in the information with the fittings, if not leave at least a 6 inch gap around the edge.

Sounds familiar, usually either that or dryliners cover everything up

    Split load CUs - why?

I've dealt with of a few of the NICEIC 'reps' over the years and many of them are just satisfying their own ends by giving themselves a false sense of authority. I would argue that whoever carries out the inspection has the say so about what is and is not safe. I think if you feel it needs RCD...

    NTL Phone wiring

34v? Learn something new every day; we haven't got NTL anywhere near here so I've not come across it yet. I have built the AC and DC power installations for the repeater stations for NTL all over the country for their fiber-optic link cable but haven't a clue about the end user info in dwellings.

    Split load CUs - why?

Very unlikely to be TT then  ; go for a standard split-load and ignore the 100mA RCD.

    Split load CUs - why?

I'm not sure where your information is from il78, but 100mA RCD's certainly are permitted and in some cases are actually required to ensure compliance with the wiring reg's. If you've got your reg's book handy, check out 413-02-19/20. In many cases the sole use of MCB's will not be adequate to...

    NTL Phone wiring

See what voltage you have across 2 and 5. It should be 50vdc normally and 80v when you ring the line. If you haven't got that then there are problems with your connections. All of the comments so far by all of us have been according to the usual analogue line; you may have a digital line and I...

    cooker power supply, cable routing

Behind the skirting? Can you expand on that...? It may be that your intention isn't much safer than the first idea. The cable must be installed in accordance with the wiring reg's and within designated 'safe zones'. As breezer said, if it's not within those zones it must be within an earthed...

Extra sockets and light switch and outside light

Disagree with breezer on that one, there is no requirement for every socket in the same room to be on the same circuit; frankly if you're stupid enough (not you personally :!: ) to work on a socket without first checking it's dead then you deserve all you get  . However you do need...

    Routing cables around steels

You can buy plates exactly for this purpose. I can't for the life of me remember what they are called (safe plate or something), I've got about 100 of them (I ordered 1 about 2 years ago and they supplied 1 box of 100  , I only paid for one though and they've sat there ever since). I'll...

    kitchen units lighting

.....or you could run a 3-core down from the ceiling light carrying a switch-live, permanant-live and neutral. that way you could switch it on and off with the ceiling light now and if you change your mind later, just do as breezer said and connect a switch up in-line. Why did you fit the...

    Split load CUs - why?

Have you got a TT system? Just wondered why your whole installation on a 100mA RCD. That is usual for TT systems and if that is the case you'll probably need a 100mA/30mA split load board when you replace it. Lighting etc on the 100mA side and sockets etc on the 30mA side.
