    Garage Conversion

Thanks for the advice. The new new blockwork will be rendered so any poor workmanship will be hidden. How do I get insulation in the cavity if there are wall ties in the way?

    Garage Conversion

I am going to convert our garage which means I will have to remove the existing door, brick half up and istall a window. I know what to do with the foundations, I now need to find out how I get the new wall built correctly.I realise there's plenty to think about; air bricks, dpc, wall ties...

    Positioning smoke alarms

Yes I do want wired smoke detectors. As per my original text. It would be good though if the fire brigade just turned up and fitted a full wired smoke detection system for free. I might try the Police next see if I can get myself kitted out with some cctv and burglar alarms, for free...

    Memory Stick

I have bought a memory stick which is 4GB. Rather than transfer all my documents, photos etc from my old PC onto my new PC obviously I can just store them on the memory stick as I don't need to access them all the time. I was going to buy an external hard drive to store all these, but now I...

    Positioning smoke alarms

I am going to install smoke detectors in my house. I assume they have to be in certain positions? or can they go anywhere on the ceiling? Where could I find some guidance? Also, I was going to buy a wired system because I assume this would be cheaper than wireless? Are wired generally...

    Stelrad Radiators

A plumber has quoted me on a job; to install 3 new radiators. He has specified Stelrad Compact Radiators which seem very expensive. He has specified a 2000 x 450 K2 radiator and its £230, and 1000 x 450 K1 (two for £170) I will be building radiator covers so no one will see them, plus I...

Using a lintel as a foundation

Thanks for your advice. The lintel idea is favourite (saving time and money) Building control will need to approve it, so I'll soon find out their thoughts - which will setlle the debate. Thanks again.

Using a lintel as a foundation

I am going to convert my garage to a bedroom. This means I will need to remove the garage door, block the opening to half way and have a new window fitted. I have been told that I should dig a shallow foundation and then fix a couple of lintels into the ground, then build the blocks off...

    Moving a radiator

I would like to move a radiator across the room (a couple of metres), a friend told me there are some plastic pipes you can buy (instead of having to solder copper pipes), apparently they screw in to each other. Does anyone know where I can get some of these pipes? Are they safe to use? Are...

    Good value upvc window?

Thanks for your advice. Is there a big difference in quality between manufacturers. For example, is Everest far better than the general ones you find on the net? or are they using more or less the same material and you're paying more for the name and service? Thanks again.

    Digging foundations

I have spoken with planning - I'm okay there. I like the sound of stud rather than all the money/trouble with digging foundations, blockwork etc. I will talk to building control and get their thoughts. If I do end up going with blocks, you're right, I will give it a go as no one will see...

    Good value upvc window?

I am looking to purchase a custom made upvc window; 2000 x 1400. I assume the best deals are found on the net? There's so many companies out there it's hard to know where to find (or even recognise) good quality at a fair price. Can anyone recommend a good company? Many thanks.

    Digging foundations

I am about to convert our integral garage and would like to do as much work as possible myself. The garage door will be removed and the opening bricked up (half way) ready for a new window to be fitted. - how deep and how wide should the foundations be? - when I fill the foundations with...

    Taking a wall out

Thinking about it; the two walls (the ones with the existing door openings) are supporting walls above. The only wall that isn't a supporting wall is the one I want to remove.

    Taking a wall out

Thanks for the advice. To be clear; should I remove the bit of wall in between the existing two doors and the bit of wall above both the door openings right up to the ceiling. I suppose the new door opening won't need a lintel because it will just be stud above it? Many thanks.

    Taking a wall out

I want to convert 2 small bedrooms into one room. This means I need to remove the internal wall. Which is solid - not stud. There is no wall above it and the ceiling joists run as shown in the drawing. As you can see by the drawings/photo, if I was to remove the internal wall it would...
