    What type of lintel please?

Thank you Noseall. Am I right in assuming then that the lintel will not be flush with the front surface of the 9 inch brick supporting wall - and that the switch cable can be run in front of the lintel and still be covered by the finishing plaster?

    What type of lintel please?

I am planning to have a doorway cut through from my hallway into the back half of a semi-integral garage which I intend to use for storage. The wall in question is 9 inches thick, 2 thicknesses of brick with no cavity ( being an internal wall) The wall is load bearing, supporting the...

    New doorway cost?

My house has a semi-integral garage to the front of the property and I would like to put a single width access door from the hallway into the back of the garage. The wall is an internal load-bearing wall of double or cavity thickness and I understand it will need a lintel above the doorway...

    15mm pvc conduit

The cables in my garage are run in 15mm round pvc conduit and I now wish to extend cable to another location in the garage Unfortunately the only size of conduit generally available now is 20mm which is not going to look professional. Does anyone know where 15mm conduit (and fittings)...

    quick drying concrete

Thanks for the prompt reply, Breezer. A block a day isn't quite so bad - I can live with that. I will have to stick with one mould, thats all the resin and glass cloth I have, and its not cheap to buy. Any one had experience of quick drying cement - does it dry brittle? Thanks

    quick drying concrete

I need to make some round edged drive edging blocks about 3 inches thick and 5 inches tall , gradually tapering to 1 inches tall. This is as a result of my neighbour having his drive paved and then edged with bull-nosed blocks the sharp side of which runs at the edge of my concrete drive and...

Switch wire in a ceiling rose

Thank you, bathjobby That makes absolute sense - I presume that the lighting fuse in the main fuse box needs to be withdrawn again. Just thinking about it whilst waiting for a reply to my post, did the markings on the new fitting confuse the issue - in other words would it have mattered...

Switch wire in a ceiling rose

I am replacing an existing ceiling rose to enable me to fit a new light fitting. There are two separate black leads and also a pair of red leads linked together in "pass through" fashion. The new light fitting has terminals marked "live"and "neutral" but neither of the two existing black...

    concrete mix for garden blocks

I need to edge my front drive with blocks which will be about six inches high and three inches thick. the reason for making these myself is that I need a large radius on one top edge to avoid damage to my car tyres should I get too close. Additionally. I plan to set low voltage marker lights...

    Metal ceiling rose

Thanks for your helpful replies I guess my daughter will have to make do with a conventional light fitting. To mo2, I didn't understand what you meant by "plasticy" Certainly the cabling is not braided - the house was built in 1961ish if that helps. Last ditch question - would an RCD...

    Metal ceiling rose

My lighting circuits are run in red/black cabling - i.e. no earth wire. All the ceiling roses and bulb holders are in plastic/bakelite so presumably meet the regulations in force at the time of installation. My daughter has brought home a mini-chandelier light unit which she wants me...
