    Make-up load of concrete

Thanks for that, Noseall I've got flat, wide access to it and I've asked to make sure he's got a good 5mtr chute which should help. (Also two 6ft sons with new wellies) Dave

    Make-up load of concrete

A bit of advice sought about pouring my garage raft slab. The concrete is being delivered in two parts, a full load of 6cm and a make-up load of approx 1.3cm. I think the best way to check the make-up quantity will be to sread the concrete and then measure the outstanding depth to the top...

Feeding SWA through garage floor raft foundation

Thanks for your prompt replies. Good point about the draw string! It's the sort of thing an old fart like me would forget. Dave

Feeding SWA through garage floor raft foundation

I will be pouring the foundation for my new garage when, and if, the weather improves. Before I do it, though, I need to provide a way of getting the SWA cable from the house into the garage. The cable will run 2mtrs in a trench from the house and then through the slab. What sort of...

    crusher run

Too right! Fortunately, I've a tractor with a bucket on the front which I used to move the bulk of it.

    crusher run

Hi Yes its cheaper. Builders merchants supply it but I was told 10 tons is the minimum load. I've just been billed £332.09 incl VAT for 20 tons. Be aware though that it's not to MOT1 standard, you will find some larger lumps of stone in it. I used it for my garage raft foundation but I'm...

To float or not to float?

Just one more question about finishing my slab. I understand that it's critical to judge when to use the float to finish off the slab. How long should I wait after using the beam screed? How do I know when the concrete is ready for this process? Thanks Dave

    Finishing concrete slab

One more question. How long do I leave the concrete before using the float to finish it off? How can I tell that it's at the right point? Thanks Dave PS Panic just setting in! How do I manage to walk across the slab with the beam screed without breaking my ankle on the re-bar?

    concrete strength for foundations ....help

I too have a query about concreting in the cold. Planning to lay my garage raft foundation (6m x 6.5m) next Tuesday, forecast is 4deg daytime dropping to 1deg overnight. Is this a bit risky? Dave PS Forecast is now -1 overnight!

    Sand blinding

Yes, Woody, you're right. My architect has just been a pain in the ar**. When he drew the specs for the raft foundation (trees too close for strip foundation) the BCO's comment was "this is a bit over the top, more like a raft for a two storey dwelling than a single skin garage" Called...

    Sand blinding

Hi Noseall Thanks for the reassurance. The architect has specified 50mm. The base is 5960 x 6560. I think my hardcore layer could have been more level as I've probably used the excess sand to bring the levels up. Must go and get it finished before dark! Thanks Dave

    Sand blinding

Hi I've a panic on! I'm doing my garage base and am up to the sand blinding layer. I have had three bulk bags of "sharp concreting sand" delivered and used. I have run short so ordered another bag which came yesterday. My panic is that the new sand is a different consistency and colour to...

    Ring main and spur question

Thanks Sparkyspike Yes, they are individually spurred from sockets on the downstairs ring. There are no other power circuits upstairs. The boss's hair drier or straighteners are the only "heavy" loads in the bedroom.

    Ring main and spur question

Having read a number of postings about fused/unfused spurs, I thought I better ask about my situation. I live in a dormer bungalow built in 1970. It has a ring main supplying the downstairs sockets and the sockets in the two upstairs bedrooms (one each side of each room) are fed via single...

    Finishing concrete slab

I see, so, after the beam screed or roller striker, I use a mag float and then a trowel. Looking forward to your post tonight Thanks
