    I'm not sure I've ever seen lorries as a problem; lane hoggers and pensioners who have clearly lost their wits are the real dangers. 10-30mph over the limit makes no real difference to safety if you are sensible.

    Previous owners of my home had sink and washing machine waste going straight outside and into the drains; both of them had become brittle and fell apart when touched -the latter was only a few years old. I glossed the replacement pipe.

    It's pretty common for one of the two wall brackets to have a plastic insert which slides out - you can then slide that side out. It may be at the top of the bracket, or it may be on the bottom.

    If you're worried about the staining coming through, the I'd use BIN first. Hopefully someone with more nicotine stain experience will reply. :)

    If you don't mind it yellowing, that's fine; otherwise, go with water-based. Johnstones Aqua is highly praised.

    I will second Emily's advice. I used Permawhite on my bathroom ceiling and upper wall, then tinted some for the wainscot. It's excellent paint.

    I'd give them a light sand and see how you get on, probably a small patch to check adhesion. If that failed, I'd go the BIN route.
