    RSJ to short?

The masonry pillars may also be providing horizontal support by buttressing the adjoining wall to resist wind loads. 225mm is a good amount of bearing onto a padstone.

What size RSJ for garage roof

It doesn't really matter if someone on this website gives you a suitable size. Building control will want to see a calculation to prove the adequacy of the beam specified, which you will have to pay for.

    Room Thermostat v Valve Thermostats

Thanks Tony. Who would I get to do the work, an electrician or a vokera service engineer ? (not going through Vokera though)

    Room Thermostat v Valve Thermostats

Am I right in thinking from all this that it would eb a good idea for me to have it done to save on gas bills ? Also, it sounds like it might be a bit too complicated for me to do properly. Any idea how much I should be looking at for someone to supply and install ? (ball park figure only)

    Room Thermostat v Valve Thermostats

The boiler is a Vokera Syntesi and the timer/programmer is a Drayton Lifestyle, if thats helps anyone tell me whether its a diy job to fit a room thermostat or not ?

    Room Thermostat v Valve Thermostats

To be honest, I doubt that the system was "designed". It is an old house with half of the rads being cast iron and half normal. I have had problems with the balancing.

    Tie Bars and Strapping

Looks like heavy duty stuff. You can get the more usual type of straps at wickes and b & q. They will be near the joist hangers etc. There are also some on screwfix. Do a search for restraint straps

    Room Thermostat v Valve Thermostats

Thanks. I assume the timer has the hot water option incase it was used on a different type of system. I will post further information on the boiler and timer.

    Room Thermostat v Valve Thermostats

Do you think this inefficiency would be reduced significantly if a room stat was installed ? and is fitting a room stat a straight forward diy job or do you need to know something about the boiler ? I am not sure if the current timer is a programmer or not. Basically I can set the time on and...

    Room Thermostat v Valve Thermostats

Hi I currently have thermostatic radiator valves on all but one of my radiators and am thinking about having a room thermostat installed because i was once told that it would be more efficient. I have a vokera combi boiler on a timer but was told that the boiler would still be firing if the...

do i need noggins in floor joist?

I have only just found out that a noggin should be installed next to joist hangers. I haven't seen it in the building regs, only in the NHBC regs although may be a bit of overkill as the joists tend to be restrained by the floor boarding and ceiling anyway.

do i need noggins in floor joist?

As well as the central noggins, there should also be a line of noggins at the joist hangers.

Ridge beam positioned over window opening

By minimising vertical deflection at the ridge, the horizontal thrust at the eaves is also significantly reduced/removed

How long is the ridge beam ?

    High Strength Structural Bolts

Could be high strength friction grip bolts ? Possibly in a splice connection ?

driven piles - cut off height?

It isn't necessarily a problem if there are only two bars in the bottom due to the beam being relatively narrow. A ground beam would often be 450 to 600mm wide (although can be wider or narrower) depending what it is supporting. When the beam is wider you need more bars as there is a maximum...

driven piles - cut off height?

Could you check with your structural engineer who I assume designed the reinforcement for the ground beams ? There is probably a good chance that it will be ok, although it may also depend on the main longitudinal reinforcement bars in the bottom which would also need to be raised the extra...

Retaining wall for extension built into a banking

Just to give you an idea of what you should expect, the thickness of the reinforced concrete "stem" part of the wall will be somewhere in the region of one tenth of the retained height, possibly slightly less if the quantity of steel reinforcement is increased or slightly more if necessary to...

Do I need an RSJ (Is my house going to fall down)?

Tut Tut Shytalkz, offering to carry out design for people. I was recently notified by the moderators not to do that and swiftly followed up by a similar comment from yourself. Although don't get me wrong, I'm sure the answer would be ok. Also, you didn't ask the original poster to tell you if...
